Job summary

PETA India is seeking a research-focused advocate to provide input on Indian animal-testing issues and lead advocacy initiatives on behalf of animals used in experiments. Responsibilities

  • Analyze technical papers and translate scientific terminology into lay terms for research, policy engagement and advocacy.
  • Identify, review, and develop non-animal testing methods through literature analysis.
  • Draft data for letters, factsheets, white papers, reports and government comments.
  • Advocate for non-animal testing with government agencies, institutions, industry, media and groups.
  • Attend conferences and engage scientists, academics and policymakers as needed.
  • Research and advocate to influence animal-protection legislation related to testing.
  • Answer correspondence regarding animal-testing issues.
  • Guide whistleblowers with strict confidentiality.
  • Collaborate to develop public campaigns and training materials.
  • Perform any other duties assigned by supervisor.

Primary Responsibilities and Duties
  • Analyze technical papers and translate scientific terminology and concepts into lay terms for use in research projects, policy engagement and advocacy
  • Identify, review, and develop recommendations for non-animal testing methods for use instead of animals through analysis of scientific literature and other data sources
  • Draft and obtain the necessary data for effective letters, factsheets, white papers, reports, government comments, and other types of correspondence
  • Work with present complex and potentially controversial information and recommendations, and advocate for non-animal testing in dealings with government agencies, higher learning institutions, public- and private-sector organizations, scientific forums, corporations, media, and advocacy and special-interest groups
  • Attend and actively advocate for non-animal testing at scientific conferences and with scientists, including academics and policymakers, as needed
  • Research, interpret and advocate to influence animal-protection legislation related to animal testing
  • Answer correspondence regarding animal-testing issues
  • Work with and guide whistleblowers, ensuring strict confidentiality at all times
  • Collaborate with other staffers to research and develop public campaign and marketing materials for non-animal testing and training advocacy
  • Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
Qualifications
  • MD, DVM, or PhD in a related field and several years of relevant experience
  • Proven familiarity with and the ability to apply medical and scientific terminology
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct in-depth research
  • Proven exceptional written and verbal English communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with government agencies and academics and to professionally advocate organizational positions a plus
  • Proven ability to make sound, independent judgments
  • Demonstrated ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines
  • Demonstrated ability to handle many issues simultaneously
