Laboratory Assistant

This is a support role for practical experiments students execute as part of the science curriculum in Standards 6-12.

What is Avasara Academy?

Avasara Academy is a nonprofit institution located in Lavale Valley, just outside Pune, India. We are an all girls school with a mission to empower girls of promise to lead lives of distinction and impact. Avasara Academy currently enrolls 375 students in standards 6-12 and will eventually have an enrollment of 500.

Science at Avasara Academy

Science at Avasara equips learners with (1) Understanding of the basic principles of biology, chemistry, physics and environmental science; (2) a healthy and enduring spirit of enquiry; (3) critical thinking skills which can be applied beyond the classroom to novel, unfamiliar situations. A key element of science teaching and learning at Avasara is practical experiments.

Key Responsibilities

• Keep records of the inventory and equipment and reorder or restock all perishable or single use lab material and equipment after consultation with the Head of Department - Science
• Label specimens accurately and distribute them to the appropriate class
• Verify the equipment procured as directed by the Head of Department - Science and/or teacher who ordered the equipment (e.g. battery eliminators, biology slides, etc.)
• Repair minor damages to laboratory equipment (i.e. soldering loose or broken electrical equipment connections, etc.)
• Appropriately handle and maintain compound microscopes
• Set up a lab for experiments for Physics, Chemistry, and Biology under the guidance of the subject teacher.
• Follow procedures and acquire perishable material that is required for the lab from time to time
• Clean and maintain the work area in various classrooms and all lab equipment and supplies
• Make preparations for practical exams keeping the number of students and overages in mind (like preparing solutions of specified concentration, mounting biology specimens, etc.)

Profile of the Ideal Candidate

• Diploma (laboratory technology)/BSc Chemistry required.
• You are fluent in English and Hindi. Fluency in Marathi is also beneficial.
• Effective communication skills, both verbally and in writing.
• You have excellent interpersonal skills.
• Is well versed in safety procedures of laboratories during and after conducting experiments.
• Able to easily understand complex instructions.
• Ability to organize and prioritize work for timely completion.
