Fugro seeks an experienced offshore ROV Operations Lead to oversee remotely operated vehicle activities on subsea projects from Mumbai. You will ensure safety, efficiency and regulatory compliance while coordinating with vessel crews, the client and onshore teams.

You will mentor and develop ROV pilots, drive maintenance programs, and contribute to project planning and risk assessments within Fugro's safety culture.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic/Mechanical/Hydraulic/Mechatronics engineering.
  • 5+ years of experience with work-class ROVs.
  • Experience in offshore environments.
  • Team-leading experience is a must.
  • Ability to train and formally assess ROV Senior Pilot Technicians and Pilot Technicians.

Job Purpose: Oversees remotely operated vehicle operations at the worksite, ensuring safety, efficiency and precision. Leads the offshore ROV team through planning, execution and close-out of subsea projects, drives proactive maintenance and system administration, resolves technical issues and builds collaborative relationships with the client, vessel and onshore teams to deliver seamless project execution. Is accountable for compliance with IMCA R 004 minimum shift manning and for initiating a management of change and task risk assessment whenever manning or method deviates from the approved standard Aligns daily with the party chief, project managers, survey and engineering teams and safety officers to integrate operational goals with project timelines and safety protocols.

Liaises closely with the vessel Master, particularly on DP vessels, recognising the Masters legal responsibility for overall vessel safety. Interfaces with the client representative onboard, promoting Fugro capability and flagging operational or commercial opportunities to the onshore project manager. Coordinates with technical support and procurement on spares, defects and system readiness.

Operational Oversight and Worksite Focal Point
  • Direct and supervise ROV operations to ensure adherence to project goals, work scope and safety protocols.
  • Prepare for each dive with accurate knowledge of forecast weather, concurrent vessel/diving/technical operations and data acquisition requirements.
  • Conduct crew pre-dive briefings covering HSE rules, risk assessment, methodology, ROV route, data protocols, contingency actions and task assignment.
  • Notify the OIM, vessel Master, superintendent, party chief, diving supervisor, deck foreman and client representative before operations commence.
  • Take effective control of emergency situations, managing personnel and equipment towards a satisfactory outcome.
  • Provide clear, complete shift handovers and keep onshore management updated on ongoing and future developments.
HSE Leadership
  • Organize and manage the safety of the ROV team through safety briefings, risk assessments, toolbox talks, drills, hazard and incident reporting and permit-to-work compliance.
  • Drive Fugros no-blame culture and reinforce Stop Work Authority for every crew member and third party involved.
  • Verify that personnel supervised are competent for the work required and that equipment is adequate, safe, properly certified and maintained, with checks documented.
  • Engage with Fugros quarterly safety focus and ensure the crew understand the standards expected.
  • Investigate and report near misses and incidents in line with the company management system.
Team leading and mentoring
  • Manage, motivate and mentor the ROV team to optimize performance, delegating within competence while allowing development.
  • Train and formally assess ROV Senior Pilot Technicians and Pilot Technicians, collecting and judging evidence fairly against agreed criteria.
  • Recognize crew strengths and weaknesses, set development goals and submit accurate, detailed appraisals and end-of-trip reports.
  • Maintain an open-door policy and manage conflict to mutually acceptable outcomes.
  • Lead multinational crews effectively, adapting communication style across nationalities, languages, and client cultures.
  • Monitor fatigue and working hours, applying the contractual shift cap and recording daily fatigue checks.
Technical Expertise
  • Act as subject matter expert on assigned ROV technologies, providing technical guidance to internal teams and stakeholders.
  • Apply in-depth knowledge of ROV mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems to troubleshooting and maintenance direction.
  • Ensure the planned maintenance system is executed on schedule, that deferrals are logged and reported, and that technical bulletins are implemented.
  • Propose improvements to maintenance practice and support evaluation of emerging technologies.
Quality assurance and compliance
  • Ensure regulatory compliance and adherence to the company integrated/business management system throughout all operations. Maintain quality standards through inspections and audits, identifying and closing out deficiencies.
  • Ensure the minimum documentation set is prepared, maintained and returned: daily and weekly progress reports, PMS records, dive logs with pre/post-dive checklists, communication logs, risk assessments and toolbox talks, incident reports, mob/demob reports, appraisals, requisitions and the ROV daily logbook.
  • Use standardised Fugro forms only; raise gaps with QHSSE rather than creating new forms.
Client Interface and Commercial Awareness
  • Promote Fugro capability and identify client needs that Fugro engineering expertise can meet.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the project and the duties and obligations of all parties involved.
  • Advise the onshore project manager of financial or operational opportunities arising from client discussions.
  • Manage the contractual recording of downtime, maintenance periods, waiting on weather and equipment or vessel failure.
Material and Resource Management
  • Complete inventory checks to identify shortfalls and liaise with procurement.
  • Raise material requisitions for approval by the ROV Project Manager / Technical Manager and follow up on status and delivery.
  • Plan and manage mobilisation and demobilisation, including lifting plans, load test verification, permits and third-party coordination.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Bachelors in Electrical, electronic, mechanical, hydraulic, or mechatronics engineering
  • 5+ years of experience with work-class ROV
  • Experience in offshore
  • Team-leading experience is a must
