Turn this role into an interview — a resume and cover letter built around what this employer wants.
bp in Pune, India, invites a Reservoir Engineer to lead initial reservoir model conversions from Nexus to Eclipse, using ResSimpy, QC results, and capture learnings. This role grows to apply data science, AI and HPC to subsurface challenges, delivering automated workflows and innovative solutions.
You will join a global squad, collaborate with Houston and London teams, and work in a hybrid setup with up to 10% travel across time zones.

Let me tell you about the role
BP’s Technology Upstream R&D (URD) group is at the forefront of leading-edge technology development and innovation. Our goal is to advance our ways of working to facilitate safer, rapid and reliable operations across the bp portfolio.
bp is modernising and enhancing its subsurface toolkit. This includes moving to a GPU-enabled reservoir simulator and building/deploying agentic workflows.
The initial objective of this role (for at least the first 12 months) will be to perform reservoir simulation model conversions from Halliburton Nexus format to the Eclipse format. You will work with regional teams to perform, QC and troubleshoot this process, ensuring the resulting models capture the relevant Physical processes, development scheme and operating philosophy of each field. Minimising and understanding any differences in predicted recovery.
Upon completion of the reservoir simulator conversion project, this role will broaden to utilising your broad reservoir engineering experience, coupled Python, machine learning, high performance computing (HPC), AI and analytics, to support the transformation of subsurface ways of working. In your work you will partner with region and central staff, across subsurface, Digital Delivery and bp’s CHPC facility. This work will focus on technology development, workflow automation and next-generation simulation techniques.
Using industry tools and bp’s open source ResSimpy Python package, you will convert models between simulation formats and use your reservoir engineering experience to QC, understand and quantify any differences in response.
You will work closely with asset teams to understand individual model requirements and provide a robust and efficient conversion to the new format.
Some of the work will be hands-on editing, directly applying your skills and experience. You will also make use of AI agents. For each model converted, you will capture and codify the lessons learnt, so that each new conversion is smoother and more streamlined than the last.
The Model Conversion Work Will Be a Time-boxed Activity (estimated To Be Circa 12 Months). When Complete, Activity Will Pivot To Utilising Your Broad Classical And Reservoir Engineering Skills, Coupled With Data Science To Develop Innovative Solutions To Complex Subsurface Challenges:
Bsc / Msc degree (or equivalent) in Petroleum/ Reservoir Engineering, related applied science engineering or mathematics
Minimum 3 years experience as Reservoir Engineer, with experience in reservoir simulation.
You will work in Pune, India in squads as part of the Technology - Upstream R&D (URD) Subsurface & Wells (SS&W) group, with team members from both Houston, USA and London, UK.
You will be remotely deployed into an international, integrated, delivery ‘squad’ where day-to-day activities/deliverables will be prioritised by the squad leader in service of technology deployment.
Squads typically consist of 5-10 multi-disciplinary technical members in several locations and are deployed based on global subsurface business prioritisation. Working across time-zones will be an important part of the role.
You will work in close collaboration with subsurface teams in the country your squad supports, as well as with bp’s global subsurface technical specialists (e.g. advisors in Reservoir Simulation), bp’s Centre for High Performance Computing (CHPC) and subsurface staff in bp Technical Services - India (TSI).
