Qualifications

  • Must have strong research skills and be capable of literature review.
  • Familiarity with public policy research techniques and tools is desirable.
  • Basic understanding of survey techniques and modelling frameworks.

Responsibilities

  • Review and synthesise international and Indian literature on Transport Justice frameworks, GBA+, gender and mobility, and SROI.
  • Identify indicators, variable lists, and data sources for disaggregated socio-economic analysis.
  • Prepare analytical framework documents, data dictionaries, and diagrams.
  • Compile and clean secondary datasets (Census, NSSO, city transport data).
  • Develop survey instruments and ensure internal consistency and logical flow.
  • Conduct pilot interviews and FGDs with diverse commuter groups and officials.
  • Code qualitative transcripts using thematic frameworks and support NVivo/Atlas.ti analysis.
  • Prepare presentations, factsheets, meeting notes, and project communications.

Purpose

CEEW seeks to hire a research intern to assist the mobility team in its ongoing research on public transport co-benefit modelling assessment. The role primarily involves setting up the socio-economic modelling framework based on the core principles of transport economics. The role provides significant exposure to mixed-methods policy research, econometric and transport modelling frameworks, and some field-level engagement. The role provides opportunities to interact with and learn from the different teams at CEEW and will appeal to those interested in building quantitative research skills. In addition to the duties and responsibilities below, the individual should be prepared to take on additional responsibilities as and when necessary.

Responsibilities and Duties

  • Review and synthesise international and Indian literature on Transport Justice frameworks, GBA+, gender and mobility, and social return on investment (SROI).
  • Assist in operationalising the key transport economics study design in the Indian context — identifying indicators, variable lists, and data sources relevant to disaggregated socio-economic analysis.
  • Support the preparation of the analytical framework document, including data dictionaries, indicator mapping, and preliminary conceptual diagrams.
  • Compile and clean secondary datasets (Census, NSSO, city-level transport data) relevant to baseline variables such as household expenditure, commute time, modal share, and income levels.
  • Support developing survey instruments while keeping a check on internal consistency, logical flow, skip patterns, and alignment with model variables.
  • Assist in conducting pilot interviews and focus group discussions (FGDs) with diverse commuter groups, STU/CTU officials, urban planners, etc.
  • Assist in organising and coding qualitative transcripts using thematic frameworks, supporting the research team in NVivo/Atlas.ti analysis preparation.
  • Assist with preparing presentations, factsheets, meeting notes, and other communication materials as required by the project team.

Shortlisting Criteria

Education and experience

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree with specialisation in economics, public policy, development studies, transport planning and related fields
  • Ability to conduct systematic literature searches and synthesise information from diverse sources into clear, concise summaries.
  • Demonstrable interest in urban mobility, public transport, climate policy, or development research.
  • Must have strong research skills – capability to carry out literature review is a key requisite, familiarity with research methods is desirable.
  • Familiarity with public policy research techniques and tools is desirable.
  • Basic understanding of survey techniques and modelling frameworks.
  • Familiarity with quantitative analysis tools (R, Stata, Python, or SPSS) and/or qualitative analysis software (NVivo, Atlas.ti).
