Job summary

Responsibilities

  • Analyze concerns in submissions flagged by the integrity technology, applying rigorous evaluation to validate flags or identify false positives.
  • Assess manuscripts to determine remediation steps,True positives, or withdrawal/rejection as appropriate.
  • Review re-submissions to ensure compliance with requested changes.
  • Communicate concerns to Editors, Publishers, and authors per SOPs and policies.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external service providers to address integrity issues.
  • Develop expertise in the tools and workflows supporting publication ethics and integrity.
  • Document case files and statistics; contribute to regular reporting.

Within the Editorial Excellence team, the research integrity teams prevent and address concerns about research integrity and other breaches of publication ethics. The Editorial Excellence team ensures editorial and publishing best practice by producing training and 'self-help guides' for in-house staff and external editorial partners; contributes to system and workflow development; audits processes and technologies; provides clear and defensible action plans for complicated cases; leads journals editorial policy; and manages abstracting and indexing.

About The Role

The Research Integrity Screening Specialist plays a critical role in the pre-publication screening of submissions to resolve all identified integrity concerns. This role must blend a keen eye for detail, resourcefulness in fact-checking, and clear communication skills with our internal and external publication partners.

Roles Responsibilities
  • Analyze concerns in submissions flagged by Springer Nature’s research integrity technology solution, Screening Hub, applying critical scientific evaluation, manuscript assessment strategies, and strong decision quality to validate concerns, identify false positives, and ensure accurate outcomes to validate flags or remove false positives.
  • Conduct detailed manuscript assessments to evaluate flagged cases and decide, according to internal best practices and ensuring decision quality, which concerns can be remediated by the authors before reconsideration, which are false positives indicating that the submission is clear to proceed to next steps, and which are true positives to be actioned for withdrawal or rejection.
  • Review re-submissions where concerns have been remediated by authors to ensure compliance with requested changes.
  • Manage complexity inherent in this evaluation and decision process, and take an approach that is action-oriented.
  • Partner with internal team members and external service providers to assess and address integrity of issues that are flagged and remediation of submissions, demonstrating accountability.
  • Communicate concerns, where necessary and determined by protocols and SOPs, to Editors, Publishers, and authors for due consideration, according to relevant Springer Nature policies, COPE guidelines, and industry best practice.
  • Become an expert in the use of technologies and tools in order to provide insights into potential unethical behaviors and provide feedback regarding potential new features or improvements to publishing workflows & systems.
  • Develop and maintain a strong understanding of the evolving publication ethics landscape, identifying new types of issues, and contributing to policy development and improving workflows to address emergent needs.
  • Document case files, project plans, and statistics with detail and may use data analytics / quantitative skills to contribute insights to regular reporting.
  • With the assistance of the Team Lead, Research Integrity Screening, manage your workload to meet targets, rapidly reprioritizing as urgent issues arise.
  • Contribute, when requested by your manager, to other tasks and projects related to ensuring compliance with ethical policies/guidelines (e.g. policy and technology development, contributing to research projects, auditing journals).
  • Proactively contribute to meetings and commit to completing actions assigned to you, demonstrating accountability, ownership, and commitment to team objectives.

Essential
Experience, skills and qualifications
  • Educated to Masters level in STEM or HSS
  • 2+ years' of work experience ineditorial or publishing.
  • Knowledge/experience of the academic publishing industry, and scholarly publication processes,systemsand tools;and specifically in submission screening and/or evaluation.
  • Familiarity with publication ethics and research integrity issues, and a passion for quality control.
  • Ability to establish effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders of any background,seniority,or level of experience.A
  • A high levelof computer literacy including knowledge of and experience with Office applications.
  • Excellent organizational, prioritization, analytical and time-management skills, with superior attention to detail.
  • Positive and proactive approach to problem-solving and task management.
  • Strong communication(written and oral) and English language skills.
