Job Overview
The R&D Product Development Engineer will design and develop new products, lead sustainment/lifecycle management projects, and translate customer requirements into product specifications for prototyping, qualification testing, approval and release into production. A background in fibre optics for aerospace, defence, or marine applications is preferred.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support design and development of new products.
- Lead sustainment and lifecycle management projects.
- Translate customer requirements into product requirements, develop prototypes, qualification testing, approval, and release into production.
- Generate engineering development/production BOMs.
- Create and update documentation, drawings, and instructions for customer approval.
- Identify discrepancies between specifications, scope of work, and quotes; initiate engineering change notices (ECN).
- Create project schedules for completion of all engineering tasks and documentation.
- Collaborate with marketing, sales, production engineering, manufacturing, and quality assurance to ensure timely and cost‑effective project completion.
- Develop and review design concepts, drawings, bill of materials, and assembly processes.
- Review customer specifications for requested projects, design solutions, and provide costing to the Product Line Manager.
- Collaborate with the Product Line Manager to understand industry needs and define product line extensions.
- Support the quality department in solving customer complaints.
- Apply DFM and DFA considerations during design of components and subsystems.
- Be self‑driven, motivated, and deliver results within project schedules.
Qualifications & Experience
- B.E./B.Tech. in Mechanical Engineering.
- 4‑6 years of New Product Development and end‑to‑end component development experience (preferred in fibre optics product design) in aerospace or industrial domains.
- Working knowledge of CAD software (Creo or similar).
- Knowledge of Lean Six Sigma methodology and tools, including DFSS, FTA, RCCA, graphical analysis, hypothesis testing, and related techniques.
- Knowledge of connector products or applications is advantageous.
- Familiarity with global certifications and regulatory standards such as UL, IEC, MIL, IATF/ATEX.
- Proven ability to transform Voice of Customer into technical specifications.
- Capacity to manage multiple projects simultaneously and work effectively under tight deadlines.
- Strong conceptual, problem‑solving, and analytical skills.
- Self‑motivated, adaptive, passionate about results, and a good team player.
Desired Profiles
- Experience with the New Product Development Cycle process.
- Preferred expertise in optical cable harness design and value‑added product design.
- Experience designing optical cable harness and mechanical packaging systems for fibre optics products.
- Hands‑on experience developing QTP plans and testing/validation of optical products.
- Proficiency in Creo, AutoCAD, Windchill, SAP, and PLM software.
- Knowledge of injection‑molded plastic, die cast, sheet metal design, and manufacturing methods such as molding, stamping, plating, and other metal‑forming processes.
- Experience with tolerance stack‑up analysis, FMEA, and theoretical design calculations.
- DFSS certification or knowledge of Six Sigma tools is an added advantage.
- Experience and knowledge in structural analysis are advantageous.
- Knowledge of global certifications and regulatory standards (UL, IEC, MIL, etc.) is advantageous.
- Willingness to travel as required and on short notice.
