Individual in this role will manage execution and timely completion of engineering projects by analyzing scope, determining specifications, establishing test programs for product investigations, and preparing reports for clients. The role involves participating in the development of UL requirements, test methods, and test equipment.

Responsibilities

• Independently determine project scope, develop a preliminary plan of investigation, and establish project specifications such as cost, time, and sample requirements by analyzing client input, available supplemental data, and product construction.
• Participate in frequent travel to conduct or witness tests at client sites.
• Initiate communication with clients to promote and explain the benefits of new and existing services; follow up on contacts.
• Communicate with clients to discuss technical issues, explain UL procedures and requirements, convey project cost, and negotiate completion date and sample requirements.
• Act to address client concerns and resolve client issues.
• Provide technical assistance to clients regarding product inspection and follow‑up services.
• Establish appropriate test programs by reviewing files and manufacturer information, examining samples, and applying UL requirements; examine samples for compliance and notify clients of non‑compliance or changes in scope.
• Coordinate laboratory activities by preparing data sheets and instructions to technicians, scheduling and reviewing work of laboratory technicians and support staff, and establishing completion dates.
• Coordinate administrative aspects of project management.
• Serve as Project Handler of record and may sign as Reviewer of record as assigned.
• Communicate project status and results to clients through frequent contact and by preparing reports.
• Prepare follow‑up service procedures and information pages.
• Resolve engineering issues associated with Variation Notices by analyzing and reporting on the acceptability of the variations.
• Propose development of new and/or revised UL requirements and develop special test methods and test equipment.
• Represent UL at industry‑related functions such as seminars and trade shows.
• Train office, field, and laboratory staff as well as entry‑level engineers.
• Read and follow the Underwriters Laboratories Code of Conduct and adhere to all physical and digital security practices.
• Perform other duties as directed.
• Maintain flexibility to work in other domains such as Fire Suppression.

Qualifications

• University degree in Electrical Engineering.
• 7–10 years of engineering or industrial laboratory experience.
• Experience with heat and smoke detectors, strobes, other indicating devices, and Fire Alarm Control Panels.
• Candidates from Testing, Inspection & Certification industry preferred.
• Detailed knowledge of the technical vocabulary common to the appropriate discipline.
• Working knowledge of conformity standards used in the area of expertise.
• Demonstrated ability to apply project‑handling concepts in the area of expertise.
• Strong communication skills.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office.
• Compliance engineering experience preferred.
