Job Summary

The Professor and Head of Department (HOD) of Urology leads the clinical, operative, academic, and research initiatives of the Urology department. Key objectives include directing the outpatient department (OPD) and inpatient surgical wards, managing high-volume operative suites, supervising super-specialty trainees, and maintaining institutional and educational infrastructure in line with national regulatory standards.

Core Responsibilities
  • Clinical & Advanced Surgical Excellence
  • Endourology & Minimally Invasive Surgery: Perform and supervise complex, high-precision procedures including TURP (Transurethral Resection of the Prostate), URSL (Ureteroscopic Lithotripsy), PCNL (Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy), and advanced laser prostatectomies.
  • Major Reconstructive & Oncological Surgery: Lead major open, laparoscopic, or robotic-assisted surgeries such as radical nephrectomies, radical cystectomies with urinary diversion, radical prostatectomies, and urethroplasties.
  • Renal Transplantation: Where applicable, serve as the lead or consulting transplant surgeon for live-related or cadaveric renal transplantation programs, including pre-operative evaluation and post-operative immunosuppressive management.
  • Emergency Urological Care: Provide expert direction for urological emergencies, including acute urinary retention, priapism, testicular torsion, and severe genitourinary trauma.
  • Academic Leadership & Mentorship
  • Super-Specialty Guidance: Act as an accredited postgraduate and super-specialty guide/mentor for $MCh$ or $DNB$ Urology residents, supervising their surgical logbooks, clinical skill progression, and theses.
  • Educational Programming: Architect the department's academic curriculum, orchestrating weekly or daily schedules for surgical grand rounds, case presentations, mortality review meets, and uro-radiology/uro-pathology multi-disciplinary discussions.
  • Examiner Duties: Serve as a designated internal or external examiner for university super-specialty board examinations.
  • Research & Scholarly Output
  • Surgical Research & Trials: Initiate, oversee, and secure ethical clearance for clinical research projects, surgical technique modifications, or multi-centric device/clinical trials.
  • Indexed Publishing: Maintain institutional academic metrics by routinely publishing original research, clinical trials, or complex case series in indexed, peer-reviewed international or national medical journals (e.g., PubMed, Medline, Scopus) as the primary or corresponding author.
  • Administrative & Regulatory Governance
  • OT & Asset Management: Oversee the allocation of Operation Theatre (OT) tables, manage clinical rotas for junior faculty (Associate and Assistant Professors), and lead the procurement of specialized, high-cost urological equipment (e.g., holmium lasers, laparoscopy stacks, cystoscopes).
  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensure the department satisfies all infrastructural, equipment, and faculty-to-student ratio metrics mandated by the National Medical Commission (NMC) or relevant national governing boards.
Minimum Qualifications & Eligibility Criteria
  • Basic Medical Degree: MBBS from a recognized medical college.
  • Postgraduate Degree: MS or DNB in General Surgery.
  • Super-Specialty Degree: MCh or DNB in Urology / Genito-Urinary Surgery.
  • Teaching Experience: A minimum of 8 years of post-super-specialty teaching experience, including at least 3 years as a designated Associate Professor in an NMC-recognized/permitted medical teaching institution.
