Principal UX Designer - Insurtech, Travel Protection & FinTech
Expedia Group | User Experience Design
About the role

Expedia Group is building the experiences that help travelers feel prepared, confident, and supported before, during, and after their journey. Insurtech sits at the intersection of travel protection, FinTech, AI, and financial confidence. Across Expedia, Hotels.com , Vrbo, and partner channels, we are transforming protection and flexibility from generic checkout add-ons into integrated experiences that help travelers feel more confident booking and more supported throughout their journey.

As Principal UX Designer , you will define the experience strategy for this emerging platform. You will simplify complex coverage, pricing, eligibility, and claims decisions; shape differentiated protection and FinTech products; design responsible AI-powered personalization; and establish the systems and principles that allow high-trust experiences to scale across brands, markets, and partners.

This is an opportunity to shape a new category at Expedia Group-where clarity, trust, regulatory rigor, craft, and commercial impact matter equally.

Team description

The Insurtech Design team is the experience strategy and design partner for Expedia Group's Insurance & FinTech portfolio. We work across brands, lines of business, points of sale, and partner-insurer ecosystems to make protection relevant to the traveler's actual trip-not like a generic add-on. Our work spans shopping and checkout, post-booking discovery, policy understanding, disruption support, claims pathways, and emerging products such as Annual plan, Price Drop Protection, WeatherPromise, Cancel For Any Reason, and Change For Any Reason. These FinTech products are designed to create differentiated brand value and targeted traveler value propositions-reducing anxiety about price changes, weather, or inflexibility-and to weave confidence, usefulness, and moments of delight into the booking and travel journey.

Your mandate

Own the experience vision for Expedia Group's protection platform-not just individual features or insurance flows. You will:

  • Set the experience direction, principles, conceptual model, service architecture, and reusable foundation for protection and FinTech across brands, surfaces, markets, and partners.
  • Lead the highest-impact opportunities at the intersection of traveler trust, regulatory responsibility, and business growth, including contextual protection, integrated journey experiences, and differentiated FinTech value.
  • Shape product strategy, investment priorities, and roadmaps for experiences that improve traveler confidence, differentiate EG brands, and support growth across B2C, B2B/API, suppliers, and new markets.
  • Establish responsible AI and personalization principles that protect transparency, accessibility, explainability, informed choice, and appropriate legal and compliance review.
  • Set a high bar for interaction and visual craft, influence senior leaders through a clear design point of view, and mentor designers through hands‑on leadership.
In this role, you will
  • Lead end-to-end UX strategy and interaction design for complex products across web, native apps, embedded checkout, post-booking, travel, and partner experiences.
  • Translate ambiguous customer, business, and regulatory needs-including purchase confidence, policy understanding, disruption support, and claims resolution-into UX frameworks, information architecture, service blueprints, journey models, flows, and interaction systems.
  • Plan and execute mixed-methods UX activities such as discovery workshops, journey mapping, usability evaluations, concept testing, and evaluative research; turn insights into design decisions, measurable outcomes, and roadmaps.
  • Create high-fidelity designs, prototypes, and detailed specifications covering behavior, states, edge cases, accessibility, localization, disclosures, and transparency requirements.
  • Use research, data, experimentation, and outcome measures-including comprehension, trust, engagement, attach, GP, repeat behavior, booking conversion, servicing efficiency, claims outcomes, supplier economics, and no-harm guardrails-to refine the experience.
  • Partner with product, engineering,
