Principal Technical Operations Engineer
Position Summary
The Principal Technical Operations Engineer is a hands-on senior technical leader responsible for the stability, reliability, performance, and supportability of Cubic's production systems. The role involves leading the diagnosis and resolution of the most complex software defects, customer-reported issues, configuration problems, data anomalies related challenges across live, interconnected environments. As a technical authority across assigned programs, this engineer influences architecture, design, configuration, production readiness, and lifecycle decisions. The role converts production insights into sustainable engineering improvements, drives the elimination of recurring failure patterns, strengthens observability and automation, and guides cross-functional teams in maintaining operational excellence across mission-critical transportation systems.
Key Responsibilities
Production Support & Issue Resolution
- Understand the enterprise architecture end to end and own troubleshooting across multiple interconnected and complex software systems.
- Lead the investigation and resolution of high-impact software defects, configuration issues, integration failures, data anomalies for complex issues.
- Provide technical direction during the most complex cross-system production incidents, coordinating diagnosis across application, integration, database, messaging, and external interface layers.
- Perform deep-dive root cause and pattern analysis, converting findings into permanent corrective actions, preventive controls, and prioritized engineering improvements.
- Maintain system stability through proactive monitoring, configuration management, capacity awareness, and early identification of operational risks.
- Define reusable diagnostic approaches and troubleshooting standards that improve resolution quality, reduce mean time to restore, and strengthen support-team effectiveness.
Technical Leadership
- Own the technical baseline for system architecture, design, configuration, and operational supportability across the full system lifecycle.
- Demonstrate strong cross-functional collaboration and advanced expertise in diagnosing, troubleshooting, and resolving complex technical issues.
- Demonstrated experience working in a Technical Business Analyst function, with exposure to analyzing end-to-end business processes and their underlying applications, system components, integrations, and data flows to identify gaps, dependencies, risks, and opportunities for operational and technical improvement.
- Drive root cause and pattern analysis for recurring production issues, translating findings into scalable engineering improvements and preventive actions.
- Champion automation and observability improvements that reduce manual intervention, strengthen reliability, and improve operational efficiency.
- Mentor Senior Engineers and support teams, establishing engineering standards, reusable practices, and consistent approaches to complex troubleshooting and technical decision-making.
- Bridge Production Operations, Systems Engineering, Development, and business or program teams by translating operational challenges into clear engineering priorities and scalable technical solutions.
Operational Excellence
- Own the technical relationship with program teams and ensure systems meet agreed performance, availability, reliability, and supportability targets in accordance with service-level commitments.
- Drive cross-program operational maturity through standardization, automation, observability, reliability engineering, and measurable continuous-improvement initiatives.
- Develop, review, and maintain high-quality operational documentation, including runbooks, configuration guides, architectural support views, known-error records, and incident-response procedures.
- Lead post-incident reviews and ensure corrective actions address both immediate causes and broader systemic risks.
- Use incident trends, recurring failure patterns, service metrics, and operational data to prioritize engineering investments and reduce technical and operational risk.
- Influence production-readiness criteria and operational acceptance for new solutions, releases, architectural changes, and major configuration updates.
- Interface with customers, partners
