Job summary

bp in India seeks a Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership across software platforms and services, shaping architecture, standards, and delivery practices. You will collaborate with engineering, product, data science, architecture, security, and UX teams to design, deliver, and operate scalable systems.

You will guide the SDLC, drive CI/CD, IaC, monitoring, and reliability, mentor engineers, and partner with security and compliance teams to implement controls.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a related field, with 18+ years of proven experience.
• Strong problem-solving, risk assessment, collaboration, and senior stakeholder communication.
• Experience building production-grade software and leading technical teams.

The Principal Software Engineer provides technical leadership across software platforms and services, helping shape engineering standards, architecture, and delivery practices. The role combines deep software engineering expertise with the ability to solve complex technical challenges, guide technology decisions, and support teams in building secure, scalable, and resilient solutions.

Working closely with engineering, product management, data science, architecture, security, and user experience teams, this position contributes to the design, delivery, and operation of software systems that support business and technology objectives.

What you will deliver

• Own the development and evolution of software systems and services, crafting scalable, maintainable, and reusable solutions.
• Provide technical leadership across the Software Development Lifecycle, from architecture and design through deployment and operational support.
• Improve system reliability, performance, security, observability, and resilience while promoting consistent engineering standards.
• Drive adoption of modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, Infrastructure as Code, monitoring, and platform engineering.
• Contribute to technology roadmaps, engineering standards, and architectural direction.
• Mentor engineers through design reviews, technical guidance, and hands-on collaboration.
• Partner with security, audit, risk, and compliance teams to implement technical controls and support regulatory requirements.
• Evaluate emerging technologies and engineering practices to support continuous improvement.

What you will need to be successful

Technical Skills

Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Computer Information Systems, or a related field, combined with 18+ years of proven experience.

Strong problem-solving capability, risk assessment, collaborator management, and the ability to navigate complex technical environments. Excellent communication skills with experience engaging engineers, architects, product teams, and senior leaders.

Software Engineering Skills

Expertise in C#, Python, TypeScript, or another modern programming language, with experience developing production-grade software solutions.

Strong experience in software architecture, systems design, and development of secure, stable, testable, and maintainable applications. Deep understanding of software engineering best practices, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, testing, deployment, automation, and operations.

Experience building, deploying, and operating distributed systems at scale, supported by knowledge of security, privacy, monitoring, logging, alerting, and operational reliability.

Infrastructure Skills

Expertise in designing, deploying, and scaling solutions on AWS or Microsoft Azure. Strong understanding of cloud-native technologies including networking, identity, storage, databases, containers, and serverless computing. Experience supporting and troubleshooting large-scale production systems.

Database Skills

Knowledge of relational, graph, document, and key-value databases, with experience in data modelling, database design, and SQL development.
