Job summary

AECOM in India is seeking a Principal Engineer - Secondary Substation to lead a team within Transmission & Distribution. The role focuses on protecting and controlling high voltage systems, coordinating with project managers, and delivering advanced P&C solutions for global clients.

You will drive design excellence, mentor engineers, review supplier work, and ensure compliance with IEC/IEEE standards while contributing to bids and technical reports. Hybrid work model in India is offered.

Qualifications

• Master of Engineering in an engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.
• 12–15 years of work experience preferred.
• Chartered Engineer (CEng) or Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent.
• Experience leading large design teams for Grid Substation design in a global consultancy.
• Experience in HV Plant Design for EHV Grid Substations is mandatory.
• Experience in P&C FEED or detailed design of high voltage installations (132kV–400kV).
• Experience in Substation Protection and Control Scheme drawings, Relay Coordination, and related drawings is preferred.
• Exposure to IEC, IEEE, ANSI, Australian Standards, NEC, BS, and related standards is preferred.
• Should have led large teams and worked with clients independently.
• Experience with GIS and AIS EHV substation HV Plant Secondary design preferable.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Protection & Control engineers and specialists.
• Develop, refine and optimise P&C solutions including diagrams, relay settings, and wiring diagrams for various clients.
• Own reviewer role to assess supplier designs and calculations for HV projects.
• Conduct Protection Coordination Studies and Settings calculations (ETAP or similar).
• Coordinate across multi-disciplinary engineering environments and project managers.
• Support technical reports, bids, and foster client relationships.
• Ensure adherence to design management processes while leading project and client meetings.
• Mentor team members and assist with professional accreditation where appropriate.
• Ensure designs comply with IEEE, IEC, National Grid, and quality requirements.
• Drive innovation in AI, digital, scripts automation, and dynamic models.
• Perform quality control reviews of design calculations or drawings.
• Prepare technical specification sections.
• Provide input to budgets and schedules.

Job Description

We are seeking a Principal Engineer - Secondary Substation to join our Transmission & Distribution team in India. This is an exciting opportunity for a motivated engineer to contribute to impactful Energy projects across the globe and continue developing their technical expertise in a supportive, high-performing team.

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of Protection & Control engineers and technical specialists.


• Develop, refine and optimise P&C solutions including creation of key line diagrams, schematic diagrams, relay settings, SCADA topology diagrams, wiring diagrams, design specifications, interface drawings etc. for various Transmission & Distribution clients.


• Owner’s Engineers role, to review and comment on supplier designs and calculations on behalf of HV Clients, including BESS and Renewables projects


• Conduct Protection Coordination Studies and Settings calculations where required using ETAP or similar software (desired).


• Coordinate across multi-disciplinary engineering environments and project managers.


• Support with technical reports and bids, as well as foster positive relationships with clients.


• Ensure adherence to AECOM and client design management processes while leading project and client meetings as needed.


• Mentor team members in their development, facilitating opportunities that build competency, and assisting with professional accreditation where appropriate.


• Ensure design submissions comply with codes, standards such as IEEE, IEC, National Grid, and quality requirements.


• Drive innovation in AI, digital, scripts automation, develop the user defined dynamic & transient models.


• Performs quality control review of design calculations or drawings.


• Prepares technical specification sections.


• Provides input to the development of engineering budgets and schedules.

Qualifications

The successful candidate will have the following Qualifications:

• Master of Engineering degree (or equivalent education) in an appropriate engineering discipline from an accredited college or university.


• 12-15 years of work experience is preferred.


• Chartered Engineer (CEng), or Professional Engineer (PE) license or equivalent in the relevant field from any global organization (e.g., Institution of Electrical Engineers, UK)


• Prior experience in leading large design engineering teams performing Grid Substation design in a global consultancy firm is preferred.


• Experience in HV Plant Design for EHV Grid Substations is mandatory.


• Experience in P&C FEED or detailed design of high voltage installations (132kV to 400kV).


• Experience in preparation of Substation Protection and Control Scheme drawings, Relay Coordination and Settings, Panel GA drawings, Substation SCADA and communication protocols, etc is preferred.


• Previous experience in design teams working for Grid Utilities (e.g., Global National Grid, Transgrid, Powergrid etc.) for Substations and Transmission Line Electrical design.


• Exposure to International standards (IEC, IEEE, ANSI, Australian Standards, NEC, BS, Middle East region codes & standards, etc.) is preferred


• Should have led large teams and faced clients independently.


• Previous design experience working with GIS and AIS EHV substation HV Plant Secondary design is preferable.
