Job description

WSP is currently seeking a Principal Engineer – Pedestrian Modelling to join our Rail and Transit Division in Bengaluru. The role requires 8 to 14 years of experience in developing, calibrating and analysing pedestrian and crowd simulation models for railway stations, metro, LRT systems and large transit facilities. The position involves applying advanced modelling tools and data‑driven techniques to optimise passenger flow, station design and crowd management strategies across a variety of transportation projects.

Responsibilities
  • Develop, calibrate and maintain advanced passenger behaviour simulation models across multiple transportation modes, including rail, bus, air and urban mobility systems.
  • Apply static and dynamic modelling techniques, integrating data‑driven insights such as demographics, user preferences and crowd dynamics to improve accuracy and realism.
  • Validate, test and document simulation models to ensure quality, reliability and compliance with industry standards.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams—such as data scientists, software developers and project managers—to integrate models into products and project deliverables.
  • Prepare clear technical reports, visualisations and presentations to communicate modelling results and insights to clients and stakeholders.
  • Engage directly with clients to understand requirements, tailor simulation approaches and provide technical support throughout implementation.
  • Monitor emerging trends and research in passenger behaviour and modelling techniques to continuously improve methodologies.
  • Mentor and support junior team members, fostering knowledge‑sharing and professional development.
  • Foster collaboration across WSP within India and globally.
  • Train and mentor junior staff.
  • Other duties as assigned/required.
Mandatory Skills
  • Proven experience in developing passenger behaviour simulation models within transportation, urban planning or related industries.
  • Direct experience in both static and dynamic passenger modelling, such as Legion, Viswalk, CAST and MassMotion (an asset).
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python and/or Excel with VBA.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills with the ability to work on complex mathematical models and algorithms.
  • Knowledge of data analysis and visualisation tools (e.g., MATLAB, R) is a plus.
  • Familiarity with transportation systems, crowd dynamics and human factors is highly advantageous.
  • Previous involvement in the development of the Crowd Control Plan (CCP) is an asset.
  • Previous experience in performing passenger movement analysis in major transit facilities is an asset.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in a team environment.
  • Passion for innovation and a desire to contribute to the future of passenger experience in the transportation industry.
  • Exposure to international delivery models and remote collaboration.
  • Strong communication and documentation skills.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's or Master’s degree in Urban/Transportation Planning, Civil/Transportation Engineering, Applied Mathematics or a related field.
  • International professional qualification or accreditation, or eligibility to be registered as such.
Background Verification
  • Employment with WSP India is subject to the successful completion of a background verification ("BGV") check conducted by a third‑party agency appointed by WSP India.
  • Candidates are advised to ensure that all information provided during the recruitment process—including documents uploaded— is accurate and complete, both to WSP India and its BGV partner.
