Job summary

Target is seeking a Principal Engineer to shape the technology strategy for property systems in Bengaluru, India. You will own architectural direction for property planning, design, construction, operations and asset management, while driving data-driven platform initiatives.

You will lead a growing tech team, advocate extreme agile and DevOps, and partner with product and business teams to deliver scalable, real-time solutions across stores, supply chain and HQ.

Qualifications

15+ years of software/platform architecture experience, large-scale preferably.
Proven with event-driven and API-first platforms across distributed systems.
Strong cloud-native, microservices, and real-time data pipeline knowledge.
Experience integrating multiple tools and systems across ecosystems.
Exposure to property/design tech like Revit/BIM/EAM/CMMS and smart buildings.
Demonstrated leadership with ability to influence senior leadership and teams.

As a Principal Engineer, you will help shape the future of technology within Target’s Property space. This is a newly created leadership role that will own the technical strategy and architecture across Target’s property planning, design, construction, operations, and asset management systems. Architect the Future of Property Tech: Lead the design and evolution of a scalable, resilient, and intelligent platform for capital projects, smart buildings, design systems (e.g., Revit), and operations.
Modernize Legacy Tech: Guide the transformation from vendor-heavy, siloed tools (e.g., MicroStation, Maximo) to modular, service-based architecture.
Enable Data-Driven Decision-Making: Architect solutions that democratize access to property-related data - unlocking insights around location strategy, energy use, design efficiency, and operational health.
Bridge Systems and Functions: Partner across engineering, product, and business (construction, real estate, store design) to define end-to-end integration strategies that support real-time, event-driven workflows.
Mentor and Lead Technically: Serve as a hands-on leader for a growing tech team, guiding solution patterns, design reviews, and architecture governance.

Understand Target's business and technical environments and assist teams in resolving complex business challenges via current technical solutions by assessing viability/applicability/cost implication through POCs and prototypes. Collaborate with technical staff and Enterprise Architecture teams in setting technical direction across platform and drive technology lifecycle management and communication of standards/decisions to the engineering team. Participate in procurement specifications, installation, and maintenance of Target systems. Lead designing and building the Target platform API with deep focus on non-functional requirement including scalability, availability, performance, etc. while being a strong advocate of extreme agile and DevOps practices across engineers. Work with engineering leaders to build a high performing engineering team and provide technical leadership, coaching, motivation and participate in the selection of technical talent.

About You

15+ years of experience in software/platform architecture, preferably at large-scale organizations
Proven experience building event-driven and API-first platforms across distributed systems
Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures, microservices, and real-time data pipelines
Experience with system integrations across product and vendor ecosystems (20-30+ tools)
Exposure to property, construction, design tech (Revit, BIM), EAM/CMMS, or smart buildings
Familiarity with GenAI use cases, Industrial IoT data flows, and data observability tools is a plus
Has proven leadership capabilities, the ability to influence others and top leadership, interpersonal skills, and problem-solving skills
Strong team player who understands concepts of teamwork and team effectiveness.
Has excellent verbal, written, and presentation communication skills to convey complex technical solutions clearly to an organization
Understands business fundamentals and how technologies can support business goals along with how to translate business vision into a technical strategy while understanding the financial implications
