Role Overview

The Principal Backend Engineer will be a senior technical leader responsible for architecture, design governance, engineering excellence, and scalability of backend platforms. This role goes beyond team-level delivery and focuses on enterprise-grade system design, cross-team technical alignment, and long-term technology strategy.

Key Responsibilities

• Technical Leadership & Architecture
  • Own and define backend architecture standards for large-scale, distributed systems
  • Lead design reviews, architectural decisions, and technology selection across multiple teams
  • Drive microservices, event-driven, and cloud-native architectures aligned with business scale and performance needs
  • Act as the final technical authority for complex system and design challenges
• Engineering Excellence & Scalability
  • Ensure systems are highly available, scalable, secure, and fault-tolerant
  • Proactively identify and resolve performance, scalability, and reliability bottlenecks
  • Set best practices for code quality, test strategy, observability, and production readiness
• Platform & Cloud Strategy
  • Guide backend platform evolution on AWS/Azure/GCP
  • Define strategies for containerization (Docker), orchestration (Kubernetes), and cloud cost optimization
  • Lead adoption of Kafka/event streaming and asynchronous processing models at scale
• Mentorship & Collaboration
  • Mentor Senior Engineers and Tech Leads, raising the overall technical bar
  • Partner with Product, Architecture, DevOps, Security, and Data teams for aligned execution
  • Influence engineering culture through design thinking, documentation, and technical forums

Core Technical Skills

Programming & Backend Development

• Deep expertise in Java (Java 8+) with strong design and architectural judgment
• Extensive experience with Spring Boot, Spring Cloud, Hibernate, JPA
• Strong command of object-oriented design principles, SOLID, and design patterns
• Strong understanding of unit testing, integration testing, and test automation frameworks

System Design & Microservices

• Proven experience designing large-scale distributed systems
• Strong understanding of microservices architecture, inter-service communication, and resiliency patterns
• Experience implementing domain-driven design (DDD) concepts

Databases & Data Management

• Expertise in MySQL, PostgreSQL, and NoSQL databases
• Strong skills in data modeling, query optimization, and database performance tuning
• Experience handling high-volume, high-throughput transactional systems

Cloud & Infrastructure

• Hands-on leadership experience with AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud Platform
• Strong experience with Docker & Kubernetes in production environments
• Experience with Kafka for event-driven and streaming architectures

DevOps & CI/CD

• Deep understanding of CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions)
• Experience with infrastructure as code, automated deployments, and release governance
• Advocate DevSecOps and shift-left practices

Monitoring & Observability

• Experience with Prometheus, Grafana, ELK, or similar observability platforms
• Strong expertise in production monitoring, logging, and incident root-cause analysis

Development Tools

• Proficient in Git with advanced workflows (GitFlow, trunk-based development)
• Experience with IntelliJ, Copilot plugins, JIRA, and collaboration tools
• Strong experience leading code reviews across teams

Security & Compliance

• Strong knowledge of secure coding practices and OWASP principles
• Experience implementing authentication and authorization (OAuth2, JWT)
• Ability to design systems with security, compliance, and data protection in mind
