Job summary

GE Vernova in Chennai invites an experienced Electrical/Power Electronics engineer to contribute to the design and development of industrial drives and power systems. You will work on MV/LV VFD/converter engineering, cabinet design, and component selection guided by global standards.

The role requires 5–8 years of related experience, proficiency with CAD/CAE tools, and hands-on testing and validation of prototypes to ensure reliability and certification readiness.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Master’s degree in Power Electronics, Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
  • 5–8 years experience in electrical and product design & testing for industrial drives and related components.
  • Knowledge of converter design and motor/drive control systems.
  • Experience with electrical design tools like AUTOCAD, E-Plan, MATLAB/Simulink.
  • Proficiency with simulation tools such as ETAB, PSCAD, PLECS, Ansys, Altium/ORCAD.

Responsibilities

  • Define the physical configuration to optimize electrical systems and power electronics devices.
  • Design MV/LV VFD/Converter engineering and cabinet design as per standards.
  • Size VFDs and select electrical components for projects.
  • Perform calculations, modeling and simulations to meet specs.
  • Prepare design documents, BOMs, SLDs and drawings per requirements.
  • Coordinate testing and validation of prototypes and certifications.

There is latitude to rearrange the sequence to complete task/duties based on changing work situations.

Job Description

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Defining the physical configuration optimized to convert inputs that develops an electrical system energized to produce electricity. Addressing the configuration of electrical apparatus and systems, especially of power electronics devices, switchgear, transformers, bus bars, cables, non-conducting materials and comprehensive system integration concepts.
  • MV/LV VFD / Converter Engineering – Product Engineering , Power and Control cabinet design as per standards requirement.
  • VFD Sizing , electrical / power electronics part selection/ design change as required for the project .
  • Understand product / project specifications and realize requirements to design using calculations, modeling and simulations.
  • Thorough understanding of electromechanical design concepts with respect to electrical, thermal, EMC, and structural requirements to complete product design.
  • Design system/equipment to meet reliability, testing standards, manufacturability, material and cost guidelines
  • Prepare & validate Design documents - Configurations, principles of operation, application guidelines, specifications, BOM, SLD & drawings as per project and product requirement.
  • Converters parts design (Converter High power Transformer , reactor , capacitors, resistors, switchgears, aux transformers, cables and wires, power supply, terminals , bus bars and accessories)
  • Verify functional performance of prototype hardware under all specified operating conditions.Conduct / Lead / Coordinate Type test, routine test according to standards requirement and close any certification requirements.
  • Work across cross functional team to deliver the desired results. Support supply chain and manufacturing of equipment at Factory / Vendor facility
    Document functional test requirements and conduct test according to applicable standards (UL/IEC/NEC etc.…) /conduct projectFAT’s.
  • Take product development / project execution on a continuous basis and update manager systematically .Define the applicable global technical standards for product and implement in design.
  • May require travel to global units / commission engineered projects as required.
  • Resolves issues in situations that require good technical knowledge and judgment within established procedures. Consults more leading and senior team members for issues outside of defined instructions/parameters.
  • A job at this level requires good interpersonal skills. For customer facing roles, develops strong customer relationships and serves as the interface between customer and GE. Explains technical information to others.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor or Masters’ degree in Power Electronics or Electrical Engineering or Equivalent.
  • Min. 5-8years of Electrical and product design & testing expertise for industrial drives and its related components (Renewables / Oil & Gas / Marine / Metal Process Industrial knowledge preferred).
  • Good understanding of converter design with respect to power electronics is required.
  • knowledge of motors /drive control Systems with respect to application and also filter design and cable sizing.
  • Experience/knowledge in Electrical design tools like AUTOCAD / E-Plan and MATLAB/Simulink experience preferred.
  • Preferred simulation tools experience like ETAB, PSCAD, PLECS, Ansys (Electromagnetics / Electronics, Altium/ORCAD.
  • Create electrical design documents complying to global standards and working on overall VFD/ Converter projects from Order to execution
