Role: Opto-thermal Engineer
Employment Type: Full Time
Educational Qualification: Bachelor's degree or higher in Mechanical or Optical Engineering with strong industry experience
Work Experience: Minimum 4 years of optical-mechanical design experience, including a strong hands‑on background with opto‑thermomechanical assemblies.
Role Description: As an Optothermal Engineer, we are looking for one who designs, develops, and integrates optical and thermo‑mechanical systems to ensure precision alignment and performance. They collaborate on prototyping, testing, and optimizing systems for applications in fields such as aerospace, defense, and photonics.
Responsibilities & Duties
- Design complex camera systems that integrate mechanical, optical, and electrical components, translating optical requirements and sensitivities into thermo‑mechanical requirements.
- Thermal design of a LEO optical payload with frequent imaging and operations.
- Thermal design validation via thermal balance tests and other unit‑level thermal property determinations.
- Develop thermal implementation plans on the payload and work closely with the assembly, integration, and testing teams to ensure workmanship.
- Develop thermal operations plans and collaborate with the flight software team to derive software requirements for active thermal control elements.
- Collaborate with Pixxel's satellite thermal team, external manufacturing partners, and internal stakeholders to design and integrate subsystems.
- Develop and evaluate opto‑thermomechanical designs with considerations of tolerance, stability over environmental ranges, and reliability requirements.
- Drive definition of system alignment and thermomechanical calibration procedures for various assembly and test stations.
- Contribute to project planning for development schedules and BOMs to meet all build stages up to flight readiness.
Desirable Skills & Certifications
- Experience with NX - Simcenter / Femap: TMG solver (space systems thermal).
- Experience in test plan, procedure, and report preparation; design documentation.
- Familiarity with space thermal materials such as OSR, MLI, thermal pads, etc.
- Demonstrated experience in FEA modelling tools.
- Proficiency in CAD (preferably NX and Ansys) with at least 3 years of experience.
- Prior experience designing industry‑grade optical subassemblies, including optical mounts (lenses, mirrors, sensors, prisms, windows).
- Experience with complex, tight‑tolerance opto‑thermomechanical design.
- Strong command in tolerance analysis of optical systems, including use of Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T).
- Exposure to thermal properties, space‑qualified materials, and adhesives.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
Candidate Acumen
The ideal Opto-thermal candidate should excel in designing and integrating optical and thermomechanical systems with precision, using CAD and simulation tools. Proficiency in prototyping, testing, and aligning optical components is essential, as is specialization in analyzing and managing heat transfer within payload and satellite systems to ensure optimal thermal performance in challenging space environments. They are adept at using advanced simulation tools and addressing complex thermal challenges effectively.
