Job summary

eBay is seeking senior database and distributed systems engineers in India to design and build a cloud-native distributed database platform. You will work on database internals, replication, and fault tolerance, enabling high performance and scalability for millions of users.

You will lead end-to-end design, testing, deployment, and production operations, collaborating with senior engineers and applying AI-assisted development practices.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's in Computer Science or related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of experience building production-grade systems software, databases, or large-scale distributed systems.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++, with experience developing performance-critical, multithreaded systems software.
• Deep understanding of database internals, including transaction processing, WAL, MVCC, and crash recovery.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals, including replication, consistency, fault tolerance, and high availability.
• Proven ability to diagnose and optimize performance bottlenecks in large-scale systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills, technical judgment, and independent project leadership.
• Experience using AI coding agents (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) to improve engineering productivity.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

About the Role

We're looking for experienced database and distributed systems engineers to join our team and help design and build the next generation of eBay's database platform, powering mission-critical workloads for millions of buyers and sellers worldwide.

This is an opportunity to work on challenging problems in database internals, distributed storage, transaction processing, replication, fault tolerance, and performance engineering, while shaping the architecture of a critical infrastructure platform.

We welcome engineers with deep systems-level development experience, including those from database engine teams, distributed storage platforms, and storage technology companies such as Dell EMC, NetApp, or similar organizations.

What You'll Do

• Build a cloud-native distributed database: Design and develop core database components with a disaggregated compute and storage architecture, supporting independent scaling, high availability, and fault tolerance.
• Engineer database internals: Work on PostgreSQL internals, including storage and buffer management, WAL, MVCC, transaction processing, concurrency control, and query execution.
• Solve distributed systems challenges: Design and implement replication, consistency, crash recovery, failover, and distributed coordination mechanisms.
• Drive performance and scalability: Profile, benchmark, and optimize critical database paths, including storage I/O, memory management, transaction throughput, and query latency.
• Own complex systems end to end: Lead the design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production operation of critical database components.
• Shape technical architecture: Collaborate with senior engineers and architects to make key design decisions and drive long-term platform evolution.
• Leverage AI-assisted engineering: Use modern AI coding agents to accelerate development, testing, debugging, and validation while maintaining high engineering standards.

What We're Looking For

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
• 8+ years of experience building production-grade systems software, databases, storage engines, or large-scale distributed systems, or equivalent demonstrated expertise.
• Strong proficiency in C/C++, with experience developing performance-critical, multithreaded systems software.
• Deep understanding of database internals, including transaction processing, WAL, MVCC, concurrency control, buffer management, and crash recovery.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals, including replication, consistency, fault tolerance, and high availability.
• Proven ability to diagnose and optimize performance bottlenecks in complex, large-scale systems.
• Strong problem-solving skills, technical judgment, and ability to independently drive complex engineering projects.
• Experience using AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Codex, or similar tools to improve engineering productivity, with a focus on clear specifications, testing, and verification.
• Strong communication and collaboration skills.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience building cloud-native databases with disaggregated compute and storage, such as architectures found in Amazon Aurora, Google AlloyDB, Neon, or similar systems.
• Experience with distributed storage, log-structured storage, replication protocols, consensus, or distributed transaction processing.
• Familiarity with Kubernetes and cloud-native infrastructure.
• Experience operating and optimizing databases supporting mission-critical workloads at large scale.
