Job summary

Airbound is building world-changing drones and aircraft systems. We seek a Mechanical Engineering intern who has built things with their own hands, not just studied theory. No prior professional experience is required; real project experience (BAJA, FSAE, robotics) is preferred.

Based in Hoskote, Bangalore, you will explore mechanism design, composites, testing, and manufacturing processes while working with a passionate team on real prototypes.

Qualifications

• Pursuing or recently completed degree in mechanical engineering or related field.
• Hands-on project experience in BAJA, FSAE, robotics, or similar builds.
• Proficiency with 2D and 3D CAD software.
• Understanding of load calculations, tolerance analysis, and weight budgeting.
• Detail-oriented with hands-on hardware interest.
• Strong communication and ability to work with internal and external teams.
• Willingness to go the extra mile on challenging projects.

Responsibilities

• Support mechanism and assembly design from concept through production intent.
• Build and test prototypes hands-on.
• Assist with load calculations, tolerance stacks, basic FEA, weight budgets.
• Learn composites layup, injection molding, additive manufacturing, and CNC machining.
• Model and analyze composite structures, laminate design and layup optimization.
• Assist in selecting actuation hardware and writing test scripts.

About Airbound

Our mission is to make a world where everyone has access to delivery. Where goods move as freely as information moves today.

This is possible. Today the cost of moving on a scooter is ₹2/km. That’s the cost of moving a 150kg mass from point A to B. We’re bringing that mass down to less than 5kgs, concurrently bringing the cost down to 10 paise/km. This is how we make deliveries a reality. The tech is not there. The current cost of drone delivery is ₹100/km. We need to completely redefine the way things are done here. We’re building the world’s most efficient aircraft from the ground-up, and scaling that up to beyond anything the aerospace sector has ever seen. This cannot be an iterative process. We have to tear down all conventions and build everything up from scratch.

About Hardware Engineering

Hardware Engineering owns the aircraft’s physical development, from a concept sketch to a part that flies. This spans system design, mechanism design, and structural design: working out how something moves, what it’s made of, and whether it holds up under real load. Because most of what we design is custom, it also means designing the equipment we use to prove our work — rigs, jigs, and testers built specifically to validate a design before it goes anywhere near a real flight. It’s one team across concept, design, initial prototyping, and test: the full arc of getting a product from an idea to something that ships.

About the Role

We’re hiring a Mechanical Engineering Intern - for freshers and university students who’ve built things with their own hands, not just studied how to. No prior professional experience is required; what we’re looking for instead is real, hands-on project experience: BAJA, FSAE, robotics teams, personal builds, or similar.

Key Responsibilities

Mechanism & Assembly Design

• Support the design and development of mechanisms and mechanical assemblies for our aircraft, from early concept through production intent

• Build and test prototypes yourself — this is a hands-on role, not a design-and-hand-off one

Analysis & Validation

• Assist with load calculations, tolerance stacks, basic FEA, and weight budgets to validate designs before they’re cut or molded

Manufacturing Process Exposure

• Work with composites layup, injection molding, additive manufacturing, and CNC machining to learn how to choose the right process for each part

Composites & Structures Track

• If focused on composites/structures: help us model and design composite structures — laminate design, layup optimization, and structural analysis — rather than just building to a fixed layup

Mechanism Design Track

• If focused on mechanism design help select actuation hardware — servos, stepper motors, and similar — and write short scripts to drive and test them

Qualifications

Must-Have

• Currently pursuing, or recently completed, a degree in mechanical engineering or a related field

• Real hands-on project experience (BAJA, FSAE, robotics, or similar build teams) that demonstrates genuine mechanism design or composites/structures work, not just coursework

• Working familiarity with 2D and 3D CAD

• Basic understanding of load calculations, tolerance analysis, and weight budgeting

• Strength in at least one of the following:

• Strong attention to detail and a willingness to get hands-on with hardware

• Clear communicator, comfortable working with both internal teams and external vendors

• Willingness to go the extra mile when a project needs it
