Applied Materials India is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer with a strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to design, develop, and optimize mechanical layouts and tooling across the product life cycle. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, coordinate procurement, and work with suppliers to resolve technical issues affecting cost and manufacturability.

The role requires 8–12 years in semiconductor equipment domains, expertise in DFx and cost

As a Mechanical Engineer, you’ll leverage your strong foundation in physics, mathematics, and materials science to process and resolve mechanical problems, design and implement custom mechanical tooling and associated processes, and enable the handling, assembly, and disassembly of parts, components, sub-assemblies, and final assemblies throughout the product life cycle. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and modifying mechanical engineering layouts, schematics, and specifications. You will oversee manufacturing and installation processes, ensuring adherence to industry standards and regulations-- and you'll coordinate the procurement and assembly of mechanical components and equipment for design projects, identifying sources of critical parts and subsystems to resolve technical issues.

Role Responsibilities
  • Drive Design for Cost (DFC) initiatives across semiconductor equipment products to improve product competitiveness while maintaining performance, quality, reliability, safety, and customer requirements.
  • Perform Should-Cost Analysis, cost breakdown reviews, and technical-commercial assessments for fabricated parts, assemblies, and subsystem hardware.
  • Partner with Engineering, Commodity Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing, Quality, and Suppliers to identify and execute cost reduction opportunities.
  • Review drawings, specifications, BOMs, and assemblies to identify cost drivers and recommend alternative manufacturing methods, materials, tolerances, standardization opportunities, and sourcing strategies.
  • Support supplier costing reviews, RFQ evaluations, technical-commercial negotiations and cost optimization discussions.
  • Lead Value Engineering (VE) and Value Analysis (VA) initiatives focused on cost reduction, simplification, standardization, and supply chain optimization.
  • Drive engineering change implementation, savings tracking, benchmark studies, and product cost roadmap execution.
  • Support build issue resolution and supplier-related technical discussions impacting product cost, manufacturability, and sourcing decisions.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or related discipline.
  • 8-12 years of experience in Semiconductor Equipment, Cost Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Engineering, Supplier Engineering, Commodity Engineering, DFC, or related capital equipment industries.
  • Strong expertise in Design for Cost (DFC), Should-Cost Analysis, product cost modeling, and cost optimization programs.
  • Strong understanding of manufacturing cost drivers associated with Precision Machining, Sheet Metal Fabrication, Castings, Plastics, Ceramics, Weldments, Surface Treatments, and Electro-Mechanical Assemblies.
  • Strong proficiency in NX, Creo, and PLM tools such as Windchill and/or Teamcenter.
  • Strong understanding of GD&T, tolerance optimization, drawing interpretation, manufacturing processes, and their impact on product cost.
  • Experience utilizing aPriori, cost modeling platforms, or similar digital manufacturing and should-cost analysis tools.
  • Experience evaluating supplier quotations, RFQs, cost breakdowns, and technical-commercial trade-offs.
  • Strong communication, analytical, negotiation, and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, Supply Chain, or related discipline.
  • Experience supporting Semiconductor Equipment NPI, Manufacturing Ramp, and Product Cost Roadmap activities.
  • Experience with Cost Benchmarking, Cost Breakdown Analysis, VE/VA Methodologies, and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) concepts.
  • Experience driving cost reduction initiatives involving material substitutions, tolerance optimization, design simplification, standardization, and alternate supplier qualification.
  • Experience working closely with Commodity Management, Sourcing, Manufacturing, and Suppliers on cost optimization programs.
  • Experience delivering measurable savings through Value Engineering (VE) projects without compromising quality, reliability, manufacturability, safety, or customer expectations.
  • Experience leveraging AI-Powered Engineering and Productivity Tools for cost analysis, benchmarking, data mining, and decision support.
