Job summary

FPC Global is seeking a Mechanical Commissioning Engineer for data center projects. You will lead commissioning of critical mechanical infrastructure to ensure high-availability and energy efficiency.

The role requires extensive hands-on testing, IST, FAT/SAT, and collaboration with design engineers, construction teams and operations. Mumbai-based opportunities are available with competitive compensation.

The Role:

The CX Mechanical Engineer is responsible for the planning, execution, and management of commissioning activities for mission-critical mechanical systems within hyperscale data center environments. This role ensures that all mechanical and thermal infrastructure is installed, tested, integrated, and handed over in full compliance with project requirements, safety standards, and operational objectives, supporting high-availability and energy-efficient operations.

The responsibilities for this role include, but are not limited to, the following:

Lead and manage the end-to-end commissioning process for mechanical systems, from pre-functional testing through integrated systems testing (IST) and final handover.

Ensure commissioning activities are executed in accordance with approved commissioning plans, project schedulesand quality standards.

Coordinate phased and systems-based commissioning strategies typical of hyperscale delivery model

Mechanical Systems Testing & Validation

Commission and validate critical mechanical infrastructure, including but not limited to:

Chilled water systems (chillers, pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers)

Airside systems (CRAC/PAHUs, AHUs, FWUs)

Direct-to-chip, liquid cooling, or hybrid cooling systems (where applicable)

HVAC distribution systems (ductwork, piping, valves, dampers)

Fuel oil and lube oil systems supporting standby generation

Make-up water, water treatment, and blowdown systems

Verify system performance under normal, abnormal, and failure conditions.

Validate thermal performance, capacity, control response, and efficiency against design intent and client requirements.

Project Coordination & Oversight

Plan, coordinateand lead mechanical commissioning activities in collaboration with design engineers, construction teams, vendors, controls specialistsand operations stakeholders.

Act as the primary technical authority for mechanical commissioning issues on site.

Support construction readiness, system turnoverand commissioning sequencing in fast-track hyperscale environments.

Mechanical & Controls Integration

Ensure seamless integration of mechanical systems with:

Electrical power systems

Controls, BMS, and EPMS

Fire/life safety systems

IT load and white-space requirements

Validate system redundancy (N, N+1, 2N), fault tolerance, and maintainability to support mission-critical operations.

Lead functional performance testing and integrated systems testing involving mechanical failure scenarios.

Documentation & Reporting

Develop and manage commissioning documentation, including:

Commissioning plans and schedules

Mechanical test procedures and functional performance scripts

Method statements and risk assessments

Final commissioning reports, as-built recordsand handover documentation

Provide clear, accurate progress, riskand readiness reports to project and client stakeholders.

Standards & Compliance

Ensure all mechanical systems and commissioning activities comply with applicable codes, standardsand best practices, including:

ASHRAE (including TC 9.9)

CIBSE, SMACNA, IPC

IEC, ISO, and local authority requirements

TIA-942 and client-specific hyperscale standards

Support third-party audits, peer reviewsand certifications where required.

Factory & Site Acceptance Testing (FAT & SAT)

Plan, coordinateand lead FAT and SAT activities for mechanical equipment and packaged systems.

Review vendor submittals, test dataand corrective actions to ensure equipment readiness for site installation and integration.

Witness performance testing of major plant (chillers, PAHUs, cooling towers, packaged plant).

Identify technical, schedule, operationaland safety risks related to mechanical commissioning.

Implement mitigation strategies and lead root-cause analysis and troubleshooting to resolve issues efficiently.

Support rapid issue resolution in live or partially energized data hall environments.

Health, Safety & Environmental Compliance

Demonstrate a strong understanding of mechanical and process safety, particularly when working with:

Pressurized systems

Rotating equipment

Chemical treatment systems

Ensure all commissioning activities comply with health and safety regulations, permit-to-work systems, confined space requirementsand lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures.

Promote and enforce a strong safety culture across all commissioning activities.

Leadership & Team Development

Lead and support contractors, and subcontractors.

Provide technical guidance, trainingand oversight to ensure consistent commissioning quality and hyperscale delivery standards.

Interface effectively with client operations teams to ensure a smooth transition to steady-state operations.

Adhere to company policies, proceduresand quality management systems.

Capture lessons learned and promote continuous improvement in commissioning methodologies, energy performanceand reliability outcomes across hyperscale data center projects.

The ideal candidate will bring deep technical expertise in mechanical commissioning within mission-critical environments, combined with strong leadership, analytical capability, and a disciplined approach to safety, quality, and compliance.

Technical Experience & Expertise

Proven track record in commissioning critical mechanical systems within data centers or other mission-critical facilities, including:

Chilled water plants (chillers, primary/secondary pumps, heat exchangers)

Cooling towers and adiabatic systems

CRAH / CRAC units, PAHUs, FWUs

Fuel oil and lube oil systems supporting standby generators

Make-up water, water treatmentand water reuse systems

Strong understanding of data center cooling architectures, including:

Air-cooled and water-cooled systems

N, N+1, and 2N redundancy concepts

Liquid cooling and hybrid cooling systems (desirable)

Demonstrated experience validating mechanical system performance under normal, abnormal, and failure scenarios, including loss-of-power and failover events.

Solid knowledge of controls and automation systems, including:

BMS

Plant controls and sequencing

Integration with EPMS and IT load signals

Proven experience developing Functional Performance Test (FPT) and Integrated Systems Test (IST) scripts and leading on-site teams to successfully execute tests in live data center environments.

Working knowledge of commissioning Life Safety and critical interfaces, including:

Fire alarm system interfaces with HVAC

Smoke control and purge systems

Emergency shutdown and equipment interlocks

Demonstrated ability to review mechanical designs, calculationsand specifications from a commissionability, operability, and maintainability perspective.

Tools, Software & Digital Competence

Proficiency with mechanical and building services design tools such as AutoCAD (MEP coordination experience preferred).

Familiarity with BIM platforms (Revit, Navisworks) for coordination, clash detectionand commissioning readiness.

Experience using project management tools such as MS Project or equivalent.

Hands-on experience with commissioning and construction management platforms such as CxAlloy, Procore, Compass, or similar systems.

Working knowledge of data analytics, trend logs, and performance data for system validation and reporting.

Exposure to cloud-based client platforms (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) is advantageous.

Project Delivery & Operational Experience

Demonstrated experience managing mechanical commissioning activities across scheduleand resource constraints.

Proven capability to conduct technical audits and operational readiness assessments of existing facilities, including:

Installed equipment verification

System performance evaluation

Compliance with design intent and operational standards

Experience delivering projects across the full data center lifecycle—from design review and construction support through commissioning, integrated testing, and operational handover is highly desirable.

Familiarity with hyperscale delivery models and phased handover strategies is an advantage.

Leadership, Communication & Problem Solving

Strong leadership, organisationaland interpersonal skills, with the ability to guide multi-disciplinary teams, contractorsand vendors.

Effective communicator, capable of interfacing confidently with clients, operators, project stakeholdersand technical teams.

Highly developed analytical and troubleshooting skills, with the ability to identify, assessand resolve complex mechanical and controls-related issues efficiently and safely.

Essential Qualifications

B.Tech inMechanical Engineering (B.E.or equivalent).

7+ years of hands-on experience in testing and commissioning of mechanical systems in mission-critical or large-scale commercial facilities.

Minimum 5 years of commissioning experience within the data center industry, including demonstrable leadership of Integrated Systems Testing (IST).

Strong working knowledge of relevant standards, including ASHRAE (TC 9.9), CIBSE, SMACNA, Uptime Institute Tier Standards, and TIA-942.

Based in Mumbai, India, or willing to relocate to Mumbai.
