Job summary

Mercados Energy Markets India seeks a seasoned Hydraulic / Hydro-Mechanical Engineer (Manager level) to lead design, optimization, and supervision of large-scale pumping systems under a KfW-funded project in Maharashtra. Job description

  • We are seeking a highly experienced Hydraulic / Hydro-Mechanical Engineer at the Manager level to join our Project Implementation Consultant (PIC) team. In this role, you will serve as the core technical expert responsible for the hydraulic engineering design, conceptualization, and construction supervision of large-scale pumping systems under the KfW-funded project: \"Energy Efficiency Measures at Mhaisal Lift Irrigation Scheme in Maharashtra\". / Coordinator and Integrator support for Pumped Hydro Power Projects with private developers etc. Acting under FIDIC contract conditions, you will collaborate closely with the Maharashtra Krishna Valley Development Corporation (MKVDC) to optimize water flow dynamics, establish baseline efficiency criteria, and drive substantial energy and carbon reduction goals.
Detailed expectations from the role:

The Hydraulic/Hydro-Mechanical Expert will manage advisory / consulting aspects involving hydraulic system components (for LIS / Pumped Hydro Storage Power Projects) —from detailed design validation and tendering to on-site commissioning and performance compliance. Key expectations include:

  • Detailed Technical Design & Optimization: Review existing structural/electro-mechanical feasibility reports and conduct comprehensive system head curve analyses multistage pump housed for typical LIS network.
  • Baseline Efficiency Assessment: Conduct and validate baseline functionality testing on the existing high-capacity water pumps (ranging from 500 to 1500 BHP) to finalize technical specifications for replacement pump sets.
  • Tender & BOQ Formulation: Prepare technical specifications, performance monitoring parameters, and detailed Bill of Quantities (BoQ) for the hydraulic packages within the international bidding documents.
  • Equipment Testing & Quality Control (FAT/SAT): Formulate factory and site testing protocols. Travel to manufacturing facilities to witness and certify Factory Acceptance Tests (FAT) for large-capacity motors, pumps, and valves, followed by on-site Site Acceptance Tests (SAT).
  • Construction Supervision & Interface Management: Provide expert oversight during the installation of Basic Condition Restoration (BCR) initiatives, including cooling water pump systems and hydraulically operated pump discharge (HOPD) valves.
  • Commissioning & Handover Tracking: Supervise contractor-led commissioning test runs, verify that the hydraulic networks perform safely within contractually guaranteed efficiency metrics, and manage technical snag lists.
  • Operations & SOP Advisory: Conceptualize and draft operational Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for the upgraded multi-stage network, integrating real-time SCADA flow telemetry to optimize dynamic water distribution
  • Compliance Monitoring: Ensure the project adheres to all national regulations and international standards, including World Bank , IFC, ADB and KfW requirements.
  • Coordination and Communication: Liaise with clients, government/ Private agencies, and other stakeholders to present findings, discuss technical issues, and ensure project alignment with client expectations.

  • Should be able to do multi-tasking on assignments and be able to deliver in typical consulting environment.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication and presentation skills are essential for interacting with stakeholders.
  • Thorough Technical Knowledge and Understanding:

a. Deep Domain Expertise: Profound technical knowledge of macro-scale hydraulic structures, river intake design, surge analysis for high-pressure pipelines, and complex water flow hydrology simulations.

b. Consulting Agility: Proven capacity to balance multi-stage site interventions, handle rigorous technical audits, and adapt methodologies inside a fast-paced international consulting environment.

c. Technical Writing & Analytical Tools: Exceptional skill in authoring technical design reports, technical optimization briefs, and review spreadsheets containing formulaic hydraulic verification calculations.

d. Contract Management Practice: Practical understanding of project monitoring under FIDIC contract conditions (specifically MDB Harmonised \"Pink Book\" settings).

e. Soft Skills & Collaboration: High proficiency in presenting complex engineering problems clearly to state officials, project developers, external funding teams (IFC, ADB, KfW), and coordinating alongside parallel team experts.

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities, excellent written and verbal communication skills, and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Should be proficient in data analysis and adept at using presentation tools. Must have expertise in conducting in-depth research.
  • Must have a proven ability to work effectively both independently and collaboratively within a team.
Education and Experience
  • B.E./ B. Tech (Mechanical Engineering).
  • Minimum of 15 years of solid experience in the water sector, focused on macro infrastructure projects.
  • Proven milestone history as a technical lead or senior consultant on at least five (5) utility-scale water supply, Pumped hydro power projects or lift irrigation schemes.
  • Direct exposure to public utility setups or large-scale irrigation networks in India is highly desirable. Experience working with International Financial Institutions (IFIs) like KfW or the World Bank is highly desirable.
  • Specific experience in implementing performance monitoring measures in complex hydro power / energy and other infrastructure projects.
Location
  • Base location shall be Kolhapur/ Pune, Maharashtra. However, the role dictates routine field deployment and travel, including being present in person at the project coordination office / PSP Sites / Project Developer office in Maharashtra alongside active manufacturing site visits.
