Qualifications

Job Description Summary The Packaging Design Engineer will be part of GE HealthCare's global packaging organization and will lead end-to-end packaging engineering projects supporting multiple product modalities and business segments. Based at the GE BEL site in Bangalore, this individual contributor role is responsible for developing, testing, validating, and implementing packaging solutions for finished products, raw materials, plant-to-plant logistics, and customer shipments. The role will support New Product Introduction (NPI) transfers, Variable Cost Productivity (VCP), safety, sustainability, and other packaging improvement initiatives. The engineer will manage multiple projects and collaborate with global engineering, manufacturing, quality, sourcing, logistics, suppliers, and other stakeholders to deliver packaging solutions that protect products, support efficient transportation, and meet business requirements.

Job Description Roles and Responsibilities

Lead packaging engineering projects from opportunity identification and concept development through design, testing, validation, documentation, and implementation. Design and develop packaging solutions for large and complex products, finished goods, raw materials, plant-to-plant movements, and plant-to-customer shipments. Support packaging requirements for New Product Introduction (NPI), product transfers, Variable Cost Productivity (VCP), safety, sustainability, and packaging improvement projects. Develop packaging concepts, engineering drawings, specifications, and 3D models using Creo and AutoCAD. Select appropriate packaging materials and solutions using corrugated materials, wood, foam, plastics, paper, molded fiber, and other relevant packaging systems. Plan and execute packaging testing and validation activities using applicable packaging test methods and standards, including ISTA and ASTM. Evaluate packaging performance and identify opportunities to improve product protection, safety, cost, sustainability, and supply chain efficiency. Lead packaging design changes and support appropriate engineering change management and technical documentation. Work with packaging suppliers and internal stakeholders to evaluate technical solutions and support packaging qualification and implementation. Manage multiple packaging projects simultaneously and communicate project status, technical risks, decisions, and actions to relevant stakeholders. Collaborate with global and local teams across Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Sourcing, Logistics, Product Engineering, and other functions. Support both local and global packaging initiatives and work effectively with stakeholders across the US, Europe, China, and other regions.

Required Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in Packaging Engineering, or a bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering with substantial professional experience in packaging engineering and design. Minimum 7 years of relevant professional experience, with significant hands-on experience in packaging engineering, packaging design, and packaging development. Demonstrated experience leading packaging projects through design, testing, validation, and implementation. Hands-on packaging engineering experience for large or complex products; experience limited primarily to small cartons or parcel packaging is not sufficient for this role. Hands-on proficiency with Creo for packaging or related engineering design and 3D modeling. Hands-on proficiency with AutoCAD for engineering drawings and packaging-related design work. Strong knowledge of packaging materials and systems, including corrugated packaging, wood, foam, plastics, paper, and molded fiber. Experience with packaging testing and validation, including working knowledge of applicable ISTA and ASTM standards. Understanding of sustainable packaging principles and the ability to incorporate sustainability considerations into packaging design decisions.

Desired Characteristics

Demonstrated ability to manage multiple engineering projects and collaborate effectively with local and global stakeholders. Strong technical problem-solving, communication, and stakeholder management skills. Experience developing packaging solutions for medical devices, industrial equipment, or other large and technically complex products. Experience supporting NPI, product transfer, VCP/cost productivity, safety, or supply chain improvement projects. Experience developing packaging solutions for both domestic and international transportation and distribution environments. Experience working directly with packaging suppliers on design development, testing qualification, and implementation. Understanding of sustainable packaging approaches, including material optimization, waste reduction, and alternatives to traditional packaging materials. Ability to work independently while contributing effectively within a global packaging engineering organization. Strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and execute multiple projects in a global, cross-functional environment.
