Position: Lab Attendant (Faculty of Computing & Intelligent Systems)

1. Job Summary

The Faculty of Computing and Intelligent Systems is seeking a proactive and technical Lab Attendant to maintain the operational integrity of our specialized research and teaching laboratories.

It is a technical support position. You will be responsible for the physical upkeep, inventory management, and basic technical support of labs equipped with high-performance workstations, and IoT devices. The ideal candidate will bridge the gap between facility maintenance and IT support, ensuring that our faculty, researchers, and students have a safe, clean, and fully functional environment to conduct practical.

2. Key Responsibilities
A. Laboratory Maintenance
  • Hardware Hygiene: Perform routine maintenance of computer workstations, server/networking racks, and sensitive electronic equipment to prevent dust build-up and overheating.
  • Environmental Monitoring: Monitor and log temperature, humidity, and power usage in the server rooms and networking closets to ensure optimal operating conditions.
  • General Upkeep: Ensure the physical laboratory spaces are organized, safe, and presentable. Manage waste disposal, specifically electronic waste (e-waste) and packaging materials.
B. Inventory & Asset Management
  • Equipment Tracking: Maintain a central inventory database/logbook for all computing assets, including laptops, and IoT devices and sensors.
  • Consumables Management: Manage the stock of lab consumables. Reporting HoD/in-charge as needed to avoid shortages.
  • Check-in/Check-out: Manage the booking and loan system for portable devices and IoT/robotics kits for student projects.
C. Basic Technical Support (L1)
  • Triage: Perform first-line troubleshooting of hardware issues.
  • Setup: Assist in the physical setup of workstations, peripherals, and network cabling for new starters, new courses, or lab relocations.
3. Qualifications & Requirements
Education & Experience
  • Education: Diploma or Bachelors degree in Computer Science/Information Technology/Electronics, or a related field.
  • Experience: 12 years of experience in a technical support, lab maintenance, or IT helpdesk role.
  • Alternative: Candidates with significant hands-on experience (e.g., PC building, robotics clubs, electronics tinkering) without formal degrees will be considered.
Technical Skills
  • Hardware: Comfortable opening computer cases, replacing RAM/SSDs, handling delicate electronics, and managing cable hygiene (Velcro straps, cable ducts).
  • OS Knowledge: Basic familiarity with Windows, Linux (Ubuntu), and MacOS for troubleshooting driver issues and peripheral connectivity.
  • Networking: Basic understanding of Ethernet cabling (Cat5/6), patch panels, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
  • Tools: Experience with soldering irons and multimeter etc. a major plus.
Soft Skills
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to diagnose physical/hardware faults logically.
  • Communication: Clear verbal and written communication skills to interact with professors, students, and external vendors.
  • Organization: Methodical approach to inventory and space management.
