Job summary

Citi is seeking an experienced Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable enterprise backend applications. You will lead resilient services using Java and Spring Boot, develop RESTful APIs, and ensure security and compliance across releases.

Experience with Python/Flask for prototyping is a plus. Collaboration with cross‑functional teams and mentoring peers are key aspects of the role. This is a full‑time position based in India.

Qualifications

• 7–12 years of software engineering experience.
• Experience in Financial Services or large, global enterprise.
• Proficient in backend development with Java (Java 17+).
• Strong expertise with Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security.
• Relational and/or NoSQL databases; ORM and SQL optimization.
• Familiarity with Maven/Gradle, Git, and unit/integration testing.

Responsibilities

Job description

We are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to design, build, and maintain scalable, enterprise-grade applications. In this role, you will lead the implementation of resilient backend services and microservices using Java and Spring Boot, collaborate across business and engineering stakeholders, and uphold rigorous security and risk standards. Familiarity with Python and Flask for rapid prototyping, automation, or service development is an added advantage.

Responsibilities

• Design, develop, test, and deploy robust, high-performance, and secure backend applications and microservices using Java and the Spring Boot framework.
• Build and consume RESTful APIs, ensuring adherence to enterprise architectural and security standards.
• Develop lightweight microservices, automation tooling, or rapid prototypes using Python and Flask.

Project & Release Management

• Contribute to budgetary requirement definitions for assigned product areas, develop functional specifications, and create detailed project plans and software release schedules.
• Ensure technical and architectural tasks from technology departments and end users are clearly defined, prioritized, and communicated to stakeholders.

Stakeholder Collaboration

• Partner with business and development teams to identify engineering requirements, and assist in defining application and system architectures.

Governance, Security & Risk Management

• Provide solutions and processes in accordance with audit initiatives and regulatory requirements; consult regularly with Business Information Security Officers (BISOs) and Technology Information Security Officers (TISOs).
• Appropriately assess risk when business and technical decisions are made, demonstrating consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients, and assets by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules, and regulations, adhering to policy, applying sound ethical judgment, and escalating control issues transparently.

Team Mentorship & Operational Excellence

• Exhibit in-depth understanding of engineering concepts, system design principles, and design patterns.
• Assist with training activities and mentor junior team members in modern development practices, code quality, and testing standards.
• Identify opportunities for operational process improvement, automation, and CI/CD enhancements.

Required Qualifications

• Strong, hands-on experience in backend development using Java (Java 17+).
• Deep expertise in building enterprise microservices and RESTful APIs using the Spring Framework (specifically Spring Boot, Spring Data, Spring Security, etc.).
• Solid understanding of relational and/or NoSQL databases, data modeling, ORM tools (e.g., Hibernate/JPA), and SQL query optimization.
• Familiarity with build tools (Maven or Gradle), version control systems (Git), and unit/integration testing frameworks (JUnit, Mockito).

Experience & Professional Background

• Relevant experience of 7-12 years in a Software Engineering role.
• Experience working in Financial Services or a large, complex, and/or global enterprise environment.
• Proven track record of operational process change, system stability, and continuous improvement.

Core Competencies

• Consistently demonstrates clear and concise written and verbal communication skills.
• Comprehensive knowledge of design metrics, analytics tools, benchmarking activities, and related reporting to identify best practices.
• Demonstrated analytical and diagnostic skills with the ability to troubleshoot complex production issues.
• Ability to work independently, prioritize effectively, and take end-to-end ownership of project initiatives in a matrixed/virtual team environment.
• Ability to work under pressure and manage tight deadlines or evolving requirements.

Preferred / Optional Qualifications

• Hands-on experience or working knowledge of Python and lightweight web frameworks such as Flask for scripting, automation, data processing, or microservices.
• Experience with containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes/OpenShift) and CI/CD pipelines.
• Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS or GCP) and distributed messaging platforms (AWS SNS).
