The compensation differs by track and degree: the Summer track stipend is in the INR 35,000 to 60,000 per month range, while the 6-month track is closer to INR 25,000 to 45,000 per month with the trade-off of the longer duration and the meaningful PPO probability at the end.The team match happens after offer in a process IBM calls "intern placement". The candidate's resume, project history and stated technical interests are reviewed against the open intern requisitions across the Indian organisation, and the intern is matched into one of three broad areas. The hybrid cloud track works on OpenShift, IBM Cloud Pak for Data, the Cloud Pak for Integration product family, the Sterling supply chain platform and the various Kubernetes-native enterprise tools IBM ships. The AI / data track works on Watson, watsonx, the InstructLab open-source project, Db2 / Informix and the data fabric stack. The quantum track is significantly smaller in headcount but is open to interns with strong physics or maths backgrounds and works on the Qiskit open-source quantum computing toolkit and the IBM Quantum Network.Day-to-day work is structured around a clearly scoped intern project owned by the intern, with a senior engineer as technical mentor and a manager who handles the formal performance review. The first week is onboarding to IBM's tooling — the internal Travis-CI replacement, the GitHub Enterprise instance, the Slack workspace, and the IBM-specific code review and security scanning workflows. Weeks two and three are project-scoping, where the mentor and intern jointly write the project spec — what is being built, why, what is the test plan, what is the launch plan. Weeks four through ten are execution, with weekly check-ins. Week eleven is the demo and the project retrospective, presented to the broader team. Most projects ship to production by the end of the internship; the strongest interns get an internal Slack shout-out and a documented contribution that becomes a permanent reference for the PPO conversation.The technical bar IBM expects of the intern is meaningful but not as algorithmic as Google or Amazon. The interview loop is two rounds: a technical phone screen on data structures and basic algorithms (LeetCode-easy to medium), and a project-deep-dive virtual interview where the candidate walks through one of their college or personal projects in technical depth — design choices, alternative approaches considered, what worked and what would they change.
