Job summary

Assystem is seeking a Highway Design Manager to lead and oversee design and engineering activities for highway, expressway, road and transportation projects. You will plan, coordinate, review and deliver design solutions in line with client requirements, standards and timelines.

The role requires guiding a multidisciplinary team, ensuring quality, timely delivery and adherence to IRC, MoRTH, NHAI and other standards while coordinating with stakeholders and clients.

Qualifications

• 8–12+ years of highway and road design experience.
• Experience with NHAI, MoRTH, Expressway, Metro Access Roads, State Highway, or international highway projects.
• Proven experience managing multidisciplinary design teams.
• Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering.
• Master's degree in Transportation or Highway Engineering preferred.
• Professional certifications in transportation or project management are an added advantage.

Responsibilities

• Lead the geometric design of highways, expressways, urban roads, interchanges and intersections.
• Review and approve alignment studies, horizontal/vertical profiles and cross-sections.
• Ensure compliance with IRC, MoRTH, NHAI, AASHTO and other standards.
• Coordinate pavement, drainage, traffic and structural design interfaces.
• Prepare and review feasibility studies, DPRs and detailed designs.
• Lead, mentor and develop a team of highway engineers, designers and CAD/BIM staff.
• Manage project schedules, budgets and resource allocation for design activities.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, consultants, contractors and stakeholders.
• Conduct technical reviews and ensure quality assurance.

Job Description

The Highway Design Manager is responsible for leading and managing the design and engineering activities for highway, expressway, road, and transportation infrastructure projects. The role involves planning, coordinating, reviewing, and delivering highway design solutions in compliance with client requirements, national/international standards, and project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

Highway Design & Engineering

• Lead the geometric design of highways, expressways, urban roads, interchanges, intersection.
• Review and approve alignment studies, horizontal and vertical profiles, cross-sections, and corridor development plans in plan & hilly areas.
• Ensure compliance with IRC, MoRTH, NHAI, AASHTO, and other applicable design standards.
• Coordinate pavement, drainage, traffic, and structural design interfaces.
• Prepare and review feasibility studies, DPRs (Detailed Project Reports), and detailed engineering designs.

Team Leadership

• Lead, mentor, and develop a team of highway engineers, designers, and CAD/BIM professionals.
• Assign tasks and monitor team performance.
• Support recruitment, training, and competency development initiatives.

Project Management

• Manage project schedules, budgets, and resource allocation for design activities.
• Monitor project progress and ensure timely delivery of design milestones.
• Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
• Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams, consultants, contractors, and stakeholders.

Technical Review & Quality Assurance

• Conduct technical reviews of design deliverables and ensure quality compliance.
• Verify calculations, drawings, reports, and specifications before submission.
• Implement quality management procedures and best engineering practices.
• Ensure adherence to project‑specific quality standards and regulatory requirements.

Client & Stakeholder Coordination

• Act as the primary technical point of contact for clients.
• Participate in design review meetings, presentations, and technical discussions.
• Liaise with government authorities, approval agencies, and project stakeholders.

Address client comments and ensure timely incorporation into design deliverables.

Software & Design Tools

• Utilize and guide teams in the use of:
• Civil 3D
• OpenRoads Designer
• AutoCAD
• InfraWorks
• BIM platforms and other highway design software

Experience

• 8 -12+ years of experience in highway and road design projects.
• Experience in NHAI, MoRTH, Expressway, Metro Access Roads, State Highway, or International Highway Projects.
• Proven experience in managing multidisciplinary design teams.

Qualifications
