Job summary

Vedanta Resources seeks a Head of Environment to drive world-class environmental stewardship across Vedanta Alumina. The role leads regulatory compliance, sustainability performance, and stakeholder engagement, aligning with Vedanta's ZeroHarm/Zero Waste/Zero Discharge goals.

The incumbent will manage EC/CTE/CTO processes, oversee environmental monitoring, and guide a large team toward operational excellence and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor-level engineering degree in environmental-related field is mandatory.
  • Advanced degree preferred in environmental science or sustainability.
  • Minimum 12 years of relevant experience in large metals/mining/energy-heavy industries.
  • Certifications in ISO 14001, ESG, or sustainability programs are desirable.

  • Lead governance around EC, CTE, CTO and related approvals with authorities.
  • Drive sustainability programs, waste and water management, emissions control, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Oversee environmental monitoring, data analytics, and incident investigations.
  • Build and mentor a high-performing environmental team; foster accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Digitize and automate HSES and environmental management systems.

Job description

The Head Environment willbe responsible for ensuring world-class environmental stewardship, regulatorycompliance, and sustainability performance across Vedanta Alumina Business. Therole is accountable for driving environmental excellence through effectivemanagement of environmental risks, statutory compliances, waste and watermanagement, emissions control, sustainability initiatives, and stakeholderengagement. This position will work towards achieving Vedanta's vision of ZeroHarm, Zero Waste, and Zero Discharge, while ensuring adherence to allapplicable regulatory requirements, Environmental Clearances (EC), Consent toEstablish (CTE), Consent to Operate (CTO), and Vedanta Sustainability AssuranceProgram (VSAP) standards.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. 1. Environmental Compliance & Governance
  • Ensure100% compliance with applicable Environmental Laws, Rules, Regulations, andStandards.
  • Leadcompliance related to Environmental Clearance (EC), Consent to Establish (CTE),Consent to Operate (CTO), Forest & Environmental approvals, and otherstatutory requirements.
  • Representthe organization before regulatory authorities including MoEF&CC, CPCB,SPCB, District Administration, and other statutory bodies.
  • Ensuretimely submission of statutory reports, environmental returns, and regulatorydisclosures.
  • DriveISO 14001 Environmental Management System implementation and continualimprovement.
2. 2. Sustainability & Environmental Performance
  • Developand implement strategies for water conservation, waste management, carbonreduction, and resource efficiency.
  • Driveinitiatives towards Zero Waste to Landfill and Zero Liquid Discharge.
  • Monitorand improve environmental performance indicators including emissions,effluents, waste generation, water consumption, and carbon footprint.
  • Ensureadherence to Vedanta Sustainability Assurance Program (VSAP) and ESGcommitments.
  • Leadbiodiversity conservation, green belt development, plantation programs, andecosystem preservation initiatives.
  • Overseeenvironmental monitoring programs covering air quality, water quality, soilquality, noise levels, stack emissions, and wastewater.
  • Identify,assess, and mitigate environmental risks across operations.
  • Leadenvironmental incident investigations, corrective actions, and preventivemeasures.
  • Ensurepreparedness and response mechanisms for environmental emergencies.
4. 4. Operational Excellence
  • Monitoroperation and performance of environmental infrastructure including EffluentTreatment Plants (ETP), Sewage Treatment Plants (STP), Water Treatment Systems,Waste Management Facilities, Environmental Monitoring Systems etc.
  • Ensureeffective waste segregation, handling, treatment, recycling, and disposalpractices.
  • Drivedigitization and automation of HSES and environmental management systems.
5. 5. Stakeholder Management
  • Liaiseeffectively with regulatory authorities, external agencies, consultants,auditors, and certification bodies.
  • Partnerwith operations, projects, maintenance, commercial, and support functions toensure environmental compliance and sustainability integration.
  • Manageexternal audits, environmental inspections, and compliance assessments.
6. 6. Team Leadership & Capability Building
  • Build,mentor, and develop a high-performing environmental team.
  • Driveenvironmental awareness and sustainability culture across employees andbusiness partners.
  • Conductcapability-building programs and technical trainings on environmentalcompliance and best practices.
  • Fostera culture of accountability, ownership, and continuous improvement.
EDUCATIONAL QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE:
  • B.Tech.(Mandatory) in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering, MiningEngineering, or related discipline and M.Tech./M.Sc. (Preferred) inEnvironmental Science.
  • 12+years of relevant experience in Environment Management within large Metals& Mining, Aluminium, Power, Steel or Heavy Engineering industries.
  • Specializedcertifications in Environmental Management, Sustainability, ESG, ISO 14001, orrelated fields.
  • Provenexperience in managing environmental compliance, sustainability initiatives,statutory approvals, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Priorexperience of working with regulatory authorities such as MoEF&CC, CPCB,and SPCB is highly desirable.
  • Experience in leading large environmental teamsand driving operational sustainability programs.
FUNCTIONAL SKILLS:
  • Deepunderstanding of Environmental Laws, Acts, Rules, and Regulatory Frameworks.
  • Strongexposure to environmental management in integrated industrial complexes. Knowledgeof environmental technologies, ESG frameworks, sustainability reporting,treatment systems, and pollution control mechanisms.
  • Demonstratedsuccess in maintaining impeccable compliance records.
  • Expertisein EC, CTE, CTO, hazardous waste management, environmental monitoring, andcompliance reporting.
  • Strongknowledge of ISO 14001 and integrated management systems.
  • Abilityto build strong relationships with regulatory authorities and externalstakeholders.
  • Proficiency in environmental data analytics,digital monitoring systems, and HSES platforms.
