Job summary

JSW Steel is seeking an Electrical Protection Engineer for its Vijayanagar complex. The role focuses on safe operation of protection, control and automation systems for 400 kV/220 kV switchyards and a 1600 MW thermal power plant.

You will perform commissioning, testing, trouble-shooting and coordination with OEMs, SLDC and internal teams. Travel to project sites is required; safeguarding electrical safety is essential.

Qualifications

• B.E./B.Tech in Electrical Engineering required.
• 5–10 years of experience in 220/400 kV switchyards and thermal power plants.
• Experience with numerical protection systems and protection philosophy.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance and testing of 400 kV AIS/GIS, 220 kV switchyard, GT, UAT, ICT, transformers, feeders and busbars.
• Engineering, configuration and commissioning of protection relays (GE Vernova, Siemens SIPROTEC, Hitachi Energy ABB).
• Relay coordination studies and protection settings; IEC 61850 testing; disturbance analysis.

Position Title: Electrical Protection Engineer

Department: Electrical Maintenance – Switchyard & Protection

Role Engineer / Senior Engineer / Assistant Manager

Location: JSW Energy Vijayanagar

Reports To: AGM Electrical- Switchyard & transmission

1. Role Objective

To ensure safe, reliable, and uninterrupted operation of protection, control,

automation, and disturbance monitoring systems of 400 kV & 220 kV

Switchyards and 1600 MW Thermal Power Plant by carrying out engineering,

maintenance, testing, analysis, troubleshooting, and commissioning of

numerical protection systems.

2. Key Responsibilities

• Protection system maintenance for 400 kV AIS/GIS, 220 kV switchyard, GT, UAT, ICT, transformers, feeders, generators and busbars.
• Engineering, configuration and commissioning of GE Vernova, Siemens SIPROTEC and Hitachi Energy (ABB) IEDs.
• Relay coordination studies, settings calculation and protection philosophy.
• Secondary/Primary injection testing, end-to-end testing, CB failure, autoreclose, synch check and IEC 61850 testing.
• Disturbance analysis using COMTRADE, event logs and oscillography.
• SCADA, Micro SCADA, BCU, RTU, GPS time synchronization and communication system maintenance.
• Compliance with CEA, CERC, IEGC, SRPC, IEC, IEEE and CBIP standards.
• Preparation of relay settings, test reports, SOPs, protection database and shutdown planning.
• Coordination with OEMs, SLDC, SRLDC, KPTCL, PGCIL and internal teams.
• Ensure electrical safety, LOTO compliance and zero unsafe incidents.

Testing & Commissioning

• Plan and oversee electrical testing activities such as HV/EHV cable testing, CT/PT ratio & polarity tests, CB timing tests, relay coordination, and functional checks.
• Coordinate with OEMs and testing teams for equipment commissioning (transformers, switchgear, GIS modules, etc.).
• Ensure all pre-commissioning and energization checklists are completed and approved.

Safety & Quality

• Implement electrical safety practices and ensure work is carried out as per statutory regulations.
• Conduct toolbox talks, safety audits, and ensure compliance with HSE norms.
• Ensure workmanship and quality of installations meet project standards and client specifications.

Coordination & Communication

• Interface with clients, consultants, OEMs, and internal teams for Plant & project coordination.
• Support procurement and logistics for electrical materials and equipment.
• Report risks, and mitigation measures to management.

3. Desired Candidate Profile

• Qualification: B.E / B.Tech in Electrical Engineering.
• Experience: 5–10 years in 220/400 kV switchyards and thermal power plants.

• Siemens SIPROTEC 4 & 5 (7SA, 7SD, 7UT, 7SJ, 7SL, 7SS)
• Hitachi Energy (ABB) RED670, RET670, REL670, REB670, REC670, REF615, REM615, REL650, RET650.
• DIGSI, EnerVista, PCM600, Omicron Test Universe, ETAP/Dig-SILENT, IEC 61850.
• Strong understanding of electrical systems design, erection, and testing.
• Familiarity with national/international standards (IEC, IS, IEEE, CBIP, etc.)
• Hands-on experience with testing equipment and electrical drawings.
• Proficiency in MS Office, AutoCAD, and project monitoring tools.
• Good communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
