Job summary

Target in Bengaluru is seeking a Search Engineer to build and evolve search and discovery experiences across its digital platforms. You will work on large-scale search systems spanning information retrieval, relevance ranking, and production ML infrastructure.

You will collaborate with product managers, data scientists, ML engineers, and other teams to improve search quality, scalability, and reliability, while applying strong software engineering principles.

Qualifications

• Experience building large-scale search systems across distributed platforms.
• Strong software engineering fundamentals and experience with data pipelines.
• Familiarity with MLOps workflows, experimentation, and production ML tooling.

Team Overview

Our Search Team powers digital search experiences for millions of Target guests and supports search capabilities used by store team members. Search plays a critical role in Target’s e-commerce and in-store experiences by connecting guests and team members with relevant, accurate, and timely results. The team brings together expertise across Data Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, and MLOps to build and operate end-to-end search solutions at scale. We work on areas such as SLP experience, relevance and ranking, search APIs, data pipelines, machine learning models, experimentation, and production ML infrastructure. Our focus is on continuously improving search quality, performance, reliability, and personalization while building scalable platforms that can support Target’s evolving digital and store experiences.

Position Overview

As a Search Engineer at Target, you will help build and evolve the search and discovery experiences that enable guests to quickly find the products they need across Target’s digital platforms. You will work on large-scale search systems spanning information retrieval, query understanding, relevance ranking, semantic search, machine learning, and search infrastructure. You’ll partner closely with product managers, data scientists, machine learning engineers, and other engineering teams to improve search quality while building highly scalable, reliable, and performant services. The ideal candidate combines strong software engineering fundamentals, machine learning, data engineering and MLOps with a deep interest in search, relevance, ranking, and large-scale distributed systems. You help develop and gain insight in the application architecture. You can distill an abstract architecture into concrete design and influence the implementation. You show expertise in applying the appropriate software engineering patterns to build robust and scalable systems. You are an expert in programming and apply your skills in developing the product. You have the skills to design and implement the architecture on your own, but choose to influence your fellow engineers by proposing software designs, providing feedback on software designs and/or implementation. You leverage data science in solving complex business problems. You make decisions based on data. You show good problem solving skills and can help the team in triaging operational issues. You leverage your expertise in eliminating repeat occurrences.

About You

We are looking to hire Engineers with prior experience on Search with interest in data science, data engineering and MLOps : Code using primarily in Kotlin, Micronaut. Experience with Search Engines like SOLR and Elastic Search Experience on streaming systems like Kakfa. Experience on Kafka Streams is added advantage.
