Job Summary

The Electronic Systems Engineer – Hardware is responsible for the design, development, validation, and continuous improvement of electronic hardware solutions that support Cummins products across a wide range of customer applications. The role contributes to the development of electronic sensors, actuators, control units, wiring harnesses, control systems, and associated analog and digital circuits to ensure reliable product performance, quality, and compliance with customer and business requirements. Working closely with cross-functional engineering teams, the incumbent supports product development, problem resolution, system integration, and continuous improvement initiatives while ensuring adherence to Cummins engineering standards and best practices.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, validate, and integrate electronic hardware components including sensors, actuators, electronic control modules (ECMs), control units, wiring harnesses, and associated analog and digital circuits.

  • Investigate electronic hardware issues, perform root cause analysis, recommend corrective actions, and support timely problem resolution.

  • Apply engineering principles, design methodologies, and analytical tools to develop reliable, cost-effective, and high-quality hardware solutions.

  • Support hardware development activities including requirements analysis, circuit simulation, worst-case analysis, DFMEA/PFMEA, Fault Tree Analysis (FTA), schematic capture, and design verification.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including software, systems, validation, manufacturing, quality, suppliers, and product engineering to ensure successful product integration.

  • Support verification and validation activities by reviewing test results, analyzing failures, and ensuring compliance with technical requirements and engineering standards.

  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation including design specifications, validation reports, engineering changes, and problem resolution records.

  • Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, and product development activities throughout the product lifecycle.

  • Support continuous improvement of hardware development processes, engineering tools, and technical standards.

  • Coordinate with suppliers and internal stakeholders to resolve technical issues and support component development activities.

  • Utilize engineering software and simulation tools to evaluate hardware designs and improve product performance and reliability.

  • Contribute to project planning, execution, and delivery while meeting quality, cost, and schedule objectives.

  • Support knowledge sharing, mentoring, and technical guidance within the engineering team.

  • Ensure compliance with Cummins engineering processes, safety standards, and applicable regulatory requirements.

Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering, Mechatronics, or another relevant STEM discipline.

  • Master's Degree in a relevant engineering discipline may be preferred for selected roles.

  • Knowledge of electronic hardware development processes, engineering standards, and design methodologies.

  • This position may require licensing for compliance with export control or sanctions regulations.

Skills and Experience Needed
  • Entry-level or early-career engineering experience in electronic hardware development through internships, co-op programs, academic projects, or relevant industry experience.

  • Understanding of electronic hardware design, circuit analysis, sensors, actuators, control modules, wiring systems, and embedded hardware.

  • Experience using engineering design methodologies such as DFMEA, PFMEA, circuit simulation, schematic capture, and requirements analysis.

  • Knowledge of hardware validation, testing methodologies, and engineering documentation practices.

  • Familiarity with electronic test equipment, laboratory tools, and troubleshooting techniques.

  • Experience collaborating with multidisciplinary engineering teams throughout the product development lifecycle.

  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and root cause investigation skills.

  • Ability to interpret technical specifications, engineering drawings, and electronic schematics.

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications; exposure to electronic design and simulation tools is preferred.

  • Good written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information effectively.

  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deliver results in a collaborative engineering environment.
