Job description

Umendra Life Sciences manufactures OTC topical pharmaceuticals and personal care products — creams, gels, lotions and ointments — primarily for the US and other international markets.

We are looking to add an EHS Executive to our team.

The role

You will own day-to-day Environment, Health and Safety at the site — the shop floor version, not the head-office version. That means being visibly present in operational areas, knowing the high-risk jobs before they start, and having the standing to intervene when something isn't right. You'll work alongside production, maintenance, projects, HR and contractors.

What you'll do
  • Run the daily inspection rhythm — identify unsafe acts and conditions, drive corrective action to closure, and stay on it until it's closed.
  • Own the permit-to-work system end-to-end: hot work, work at height, confined-space entry, electrical isolation and other high-risk activities.
  • Lead risk assessments, Job Safety Analyses and toolbox talks so that hazard thinking sits with the line, not only with you.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses and environmental events — root cause, CAPA, and verification that the fix held.
  • Own emergency preparedness: response plans plus fire, evacuation, spill-response and first-aid drills that people actually take seriously.
  • Deliver induction, refresher and contractor safety training, and hold contractors to the same standard as employees — from prequalification through on-site supervision.
  • Keep statutory compliance clean: registers, inspection records, testing and certification schedules, and direct interaction with regulators and external auditors.
  • Manage environmental controls — waste segregation, hazardous-waste handling, emissions, effluent, and energy and resource use.
  • Drive implementation and continual improvement of ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 at the site.
  • Report what matters — weekly and monthly EHS dashboards, trend analysis and honest escalation to management.
  • Build participation: safety observations, campaigns, suggestions and committee meetings that generate real input from the floor.
Who fits

Requirements, not preferences:

  • Based at or willing to relocate to Ahmedabad, and able to work on-site at our Bavla plant daily. This is a plant role — there is no remote or hybrid arrangement.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on EHS experience in manufacturing, warehousing, logistics, engineering or construction. Plant floor exposure is essential; corporate or consulting-only backgrounds won't translate.
  • Recognized Diploma or Advanced Diploma in Industrial Safety, meeting applicable statutory requirements, alongside a Bachelor's degree or diploma in Engineering, Science, Environmental Studies or a related discipline.
  • Working knowledge of Indian occupational safety, fire, environmental and waste-management regulations.
  • Direct experience running incident investigations, risk assessments, permit-to-work systems and emergency response.
  • Clear written and verbal communication in English, Hindi and Gujarati — you'll be explaining the same standard to a plant head and to a contract worker on the same day.

Preferred: ISO 45001 / ISO 14001 internal auditor certification. First-aid and fire-safety certification. Pharmaceutical, cosmetic or chemical manufacturing background.

What we're really looking for is judgment and persistence — the confidence to interrupt work that's unsafe, the credibility to be listened to when you do, and the patience to chase a corrective action until it's genuinely closed rather than merely logged.

What this role is not
  • Not a corporate or head-office EHS position — you will spend most of your day in operational areas, not at a desk.
  • Not remote or hybrid.
  • Not a documentation-only role. Records matter, but a candidate whose experience is limited to maintaining files and preparing audit paperwork will struggle here.
  • Not a role where safety gets overruled by schedule pressure.
How you'll be measured

Recordable incidents and lost-time injuries. Near-miss reporting rates — we want these going up, not down. Closure rate and ageing of corrective actions. Completion of inspections, audits, training and drills. Contractor and permit compliance. Zero overdue statutory renewals. Reduction in repeat findings.
