Job summary

Burns & McDonnell India in Bengaluru seeks a Distribution Planning Engineer to join our Power Systems Planning team. You will develop and perform comprehensive power system studies and models for energy clients worldwide, covering generation, distribution, and industrial systems.

The role requires proficiency with CYME/Synergi/Windmil/SKM/ETAP, and Python automation to streamline analysis and reporting. You will collaborate across time zones, lead projects, and mentor junior engineers.

Qualifications

  • 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in power system studies.
  • Good understanding of electric utility operations, planning or consulting.
  • Familiar with load flow, short circuit, ARC flash, transfer capability, system impact studies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform grid modernization and distribution planning studies.
  • Prepare grid for distributed generation and electrification.
  • Conduct studies to support utilities with load flow, transfer capability and system impact analyses.
  • Conduct generation interconnection, reliability planning, DER and electrification impact studies.

Description

As a Distribution Planning Engineer, you will be a key member of our Power Systems Planning team, contributing significantly to the growth of transmission and distribution activities. You will be responsible for developing and performing comprehensive power system studies and models for energy clients worldwide, covering aspects of power generation (both conventional and non-conventional), distribution, and industrial systems. This role will require the application of advanced engineering techniques to solve complex problems in the distribution sectors.

Responsibilities
  • Perform Grid modernization and Electrical distribution planning studies and the application of grid technologies to improve grid performance.
  • Prepare the grid for future challenges represented by distributed generation and electrification.
  • Perform a broad range of studies and other services to support electricity distribution utilities to make decisions backed by business and engineering analysis, such as load flow, transfer capability, system impact studies etc.
  • Perform generation interconnection, reliability planning, DER and electrification impact consulting, and hosting capacity studies under the guidance of seniors
  • Learn and use suitable Distribution planning software for studies such as CYME, Synergi, Windmil, SKM, ETAP, and equivalent.
  • Evaluating system performance, simulation of power flows, and developing solutions and upgrades of electric distribution facilities.
  • Evaluating non-wires alternative solutions to traditional system reconfiguration and/or upgrade solutions.
  • Perform Power system planning Studies on Multiple Projects simultaneously, as required.
  • Be a committed team player able to work on own initiative.
  • Lead and execute power system planning and analysis projects, ensuring that deadlines and quality standards are met.
  • Provide technical direction to other team members, including training and development of junior engineers.
  • Develop and implement automation tools using Python and other software to streamline repetitive tasks involved in power system analysis and reporting.
  • Collaborate with international teams and clients, with the flexibility to work across multiple time zones.
  • Understand BMI Culture and participate in Department activities.
Qualifications
  • MTech in Power systems or bachelor’s in electrical engineering; advanced degree preferred.
  • 2 to 3 years of relevant experience in the power system studies domain (Utility experience preferred).
  • Good understanding of electric utility operations, planning, or consulting of grid modernization and distribution planning studies
  • Good Knowledge and Experience of Load Flow, Short Circuit, ARC Flash, transfer capability, system impact studies etc.
  • Well versed with Software tools such as CYME, Synergi, Windmil, SKM, ETAP, and equivalent.
  • Familiar with operational technologies and grid device integration such as outage and distribution management systems (OMS/DMS).
  • Experience of evaluating system performance, simulation of power flows, and developing solutions and upgrades of electric distribution facilities.
  • Knowledge and Experience evaluating non-wires alternative solutions to traditional system reconfiguration and/or upgrade solutions.
  • Knowledge of utility electric distribution system planning, design, construction and operations.
  • Familiar with Major Regulations and Industry codes and Standards such as NEC for Electrical Design and construction guidelines
  • Ability to perform under pressure and tight deadlines.
  • Ability to support multiple projects concurrently to ensure delivery deadlines are met.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong computer skills (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite) and Ability to work methodically and analytically in a quantitative problem-solving environment and demonstrated critical thinking skills.
  • Good analytical and Problem-solving skills.
