About the role

Job Title: Data Science Manager – AI Governance; Innovation.
Team: Tesco Data Science Team focused on modelling complex business problems and deploying data‑products at scale across physical stores, online, supply chain, marketing, Clubcard and more.

The team tackles domains such as online, pricing, security, fulfilment, distribution, property, IoT and computer vision, encouraging rotation among data scientists to build deep expertise. Approximately 10% of the week is dedicated to learning and personal development.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own the innovation process across all business and technical domains, leading the development of data‑science algorithmic features.
  • Develop, implement and manage AI governance frameworks to ensure ethical and responsible AI practices, monitoring compliance with regulations and standards.
  • Set up teams and projects for success by ensuring appropriate resourcing and unblocking difficult situations.
  • Frame and scope data‑science problems across multiple projects.
  • Line‑manage data scientists, providing guidance, mentorship and support in their daily work.
  • Help define the strategic direction of the overall team, trading off conflicting priorities.
  • Conduct risk assessments and collaborate with legal, compliance and technical teams to address governance issues and educate employees on AI policies and procedures.
  • Partner with Engineering to design complex software systems and influence the wider team architecture.
  • Promote data science across Tesco and represent Tesco in the external data‑science community.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Strong numerical background – a higher degree in mathematics, science, engineering or computer science focused on data science.
  • Analytical mindset and ability to apply academic knowledge to specific business problems.
  • High‑level expertise in Python and machine learning.
  • Experience with software engineering best practices (SDLC) and designing reliable, scalable ML systems.
  • Experience with open‑source big‑data technologies and cloud platforms, and setting up/managing open‑source data‑science environments.
  • Knowledge of AI ethics, legal and regulatory frameworks related to AI and data protection, and experience in data governance.
  • Familiarity with risk management and compliance frameworks.
  • Excellent communication skills – ability to explain complex technical concepts to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proven management and leadership experience: hiring, building high‑performing data‑science teams, driving innovation projects, influencing senior stakeholders, and setting strategic direction.
  • Experience in AI governance projects, collaborating with legal, compliance and technical teams, and coaching/mentoring others.
  • Experience in the retail sector, logistics or ecommerce is advantageous but not required.
