RML Pathology Job Description (JD)
Position: Cytogenetic Technologist / Cytogenetics Specialist
1. Position Overview
The Cytogenetic Technologist at RML Pathology is responsible for performing all cytogenetic techniques including karyotyping, FISH, and related molecular procedures with accuracy, quality, and adherence to laboratory standards. The role ensures timely processing, analysis, reporting support, and compliance with NABL/NABH and RML internal SOPs.
2. Minimum Qualification
- Master’s degree in Genetics / Biotechnology / Life Sciences
- Additional training in Cytogenetics / Molecular Genetics preferred
- Experience in Karyotyping and FISH will be an added advantage
3. Required Skills
- Strong understanding of Karyotyping, FISH processing & analysis
- Knowledge of sample handling, cell culture, chromosome preparation
- Ability to work on imaging software related to cytogenetics
- Good communication & documentation skills
- Strong computer skills (Excel, PowerPoint, reporting systems)
- Ability to follow SOPs, maintain accuracy, and work under timelines
4. Key Roles & Responsibilities
A. Sample Processing & Laboratory Work
- Receive and verify samples for cytogenetic testing (blood, amniotic fluid, tissue, bone marrow).
- Perform cell culture, harvesting, slide preparation, and metaphase spreading.
- Prepare and hybridize slides for FISH testing as per protocol.
- Maintain proper documentation for sample workflow and QC logs.
B. Karyotyping & FISH Analysis
- Capture high-quality metaphase images using karyotyping systems.
- Perform chromosome analysis, identification of abnormalities, and prepare preliminary findings.
- Perform FISH signal interpretation and document observations.
- Ensure proper image storage and reporting support to the pathologist/geneticist.
C. Quality Control & Compliance
- Follow RML Pathology SOPs and regulatory guidelines (NABL/NABH).
- Maintain quality control records for reagents, equipment, and assays.
- Perform routine calibration and maintenance checks of microscopes, incubators, imaging systems, etc.
- Participate in internal quality audits and corrective actions.
D. Documentation & Reporting
- Ensure accurate entry of test data in LIS and departmental registers.
- Assist geneticists/pathologists in preparing final reports.
- Maintain daily work logs, sample status sheets, and QC documentation.
- Prepare PowerPoint presentations and Excel-based summary sheets if required.
E. Communication & Coordination
- Coordinate with collection centers, reception, and lab departments regarding sample requirements.
- Communicate test delays, insufficient samples, or technical issues to senior staff.
- Guide junior technicians on cytogenetics workflow and best practices (if applicable).
F. Safety & Laboratory Practices
- Follow biosafety and aseptic techniques in all cytogenetic procedures.
- Ensure proper disposal of biomedical waste as per norms.
- Maintain a clean and contamination-free workspace.
