Job description

Citi continues to enhance its business control and governance framework by building out Institutional Credit Management (ICM), a first line of defense business line, to house and consistently manage credit risk activities performed for Citi's institutional clients. ICM's objective is to provide integrated end-to-end credit underwriting, identification, measurement, management, and monitoring for wholesale credit across the enterprise. Within ICM, the Credit Underwriting function ("ICM UW" or "UW") provides credit analysis, underwriting, and first line of defense credit approval for periodic / material transaction reviews, and any necessary subsequent credit monitoring across all institutional business including Corporate Banking, Services, and Markets relationships.

ICM Underwriting Staffers manage a team of UW analysts and act as underwriter covering its own portfolio of relationships, being responsible for the continuous monitoring of that portfolio. That includes the production of annual reviews, quarterly reviews, and the support of ad-hoc transactions and portfolio & industry reviews and stress testing, in partnership with Business and Risk. The portfolio consist mainly of Public Sector entities. The coverage will include Governments, Central Banks, Government owned entities operating across different industries and Development Financial Institutions.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead execution of credit approvals, prepares and leads discussions with Risk and escalation within 1LOD; underwriting and monitoring of a portfolio of corporate clients, from early origination discussions to the development of credit approval memos and senior approval forums
  • Undertake comprehensive review of financial analysis, due diligence, projection modeling, stress testing, risk ratings and other in-depth analysis performed by junior resources (UW analysts)
  • Provide Underwriting sign-off and recommendation for transactions requiring senior approval
  • Has industry expertise and ability to discuss relevant macro and micro issues within coverage portfolio
  • Partner with Front Office on structuring new transactions and negotiating legal documentation - Build strong working relationships with key partners in Banking, Risk and with key regulators, audit/control functions
  • Lead credit conversation with both internal and external auditors related to coverage
  • Manage direct reports, tracks workload and helps to find staffing solutions to bottlenecks and urgent deliverables in cooperation with Underwriters
  • Cultivate and guide analysts, fostering team strengths and address developmental areas
  • Ensure highest standards of quality and accuracy of credit memos required to approve transactions or renew existing credit lines. Develop strong credit recommendations: appropriately assess counterparty risk and transaction risks.
  • Negotiate credit terms of ISDAs, collateral agreements, loan agreements and other trading documentation facilitating the execution of future business.
  • Stay abreast of client needs in partnership with bankers. Maintain a clear and up to date view of counterparties under its own coverage anticipating positive or negative credit developments
  • Support ICM Underwriting organization on strategic initiatives/projects as required.
Risk Management Experience
  • Independently monitoring a portfolio of clients including (i) overseeing the timely and accurate production of credit approval memos and transactions and (ii) ability to clearly articulate recommendation to risk on credit reviews in both written and verbal communication
  • Superior risk assessment skills, including problem recognition, defining, and structuring of solutions to credit related issues; strong technical skills
  • Experience in and exposure to global credit risk management standards
  • Ability to understand capital markets products and complex financing and product structures
  • Ability to provide strategic insights and strong sensitivity to macro and regulatory issues
  • Able to discuss and address issues associated with the allocation of risk assets and risk capital in partnership with banking and product organizations

  • Strong understanding of capital markets products and complex financing and product structures
  • Navigates organizational complexity and breaks silos
  • Creates and sustains a network of strong partnerships with the business in all segments geographies and other risk functions
  • Provides well-reasoned, balanced assessments of risk/return trade-offs associated with transactions and client relationships
  • Proven track record of partnering with global peers in leveraging and implementation of best practices
Qualifications
  • 12+ years risk/risk-related credit work experience in banking/financial institutions
  • Proven ability to effectively engage with regulators and internal control functions including Internal Audit and Fundamental Credit Risk as well as with external audit
  • Demonstrates strong ethics and integrity
  • Ability to see the 'big picture' in a complex environment
  • Can make decisions under pressure and short timeline
  • Excellent verbal & written communication skills. Active listening skills.
  • Excellent presentation skills - adept at presenting effectively to audiences of various sizes and various constituencies
  • Bachelor's/University degree, Master's degree preferred
