Team & Business Unit Overview
The Manufacturing Test Development team within Cisco’s Product Operations operates at the intersection of design engineering, software automation, and global supply chain manufacturing. This cross-functional, globally distributed team builds automated functional test strategies and scripts for Cisco’s high-end routing portfolio, including AI-optimized hyper-scaler platforms.
Engineers on this team directly influence product reliability and yield across global Contract Manufacturing (CM) sites, ensuring new hardware architectures transition seamlessly from prototype builds to mass production.
Role Summary & Key Responsibilities
End-to-End Test Strategy & DFT
- Design for Testability (DFT): Participate in early-stage hardware DFT assessments to ensure board-level and system-level testability before mass production.
- Manufacturing Strategy: Develop and deploy automated functional test processes at contract manufacturing sites globally to optimize test coverage and throughput.
Automation, Scripting & Analytics
- Python Test Automation: Write, maintain, and execute robust Python automation scripts to test board-level hardware components and high-end routing platforms.
- Data Analytics & Yield Optimization: Analyze manufacturing test metrics, failure logs, and yield data to drive continuous improvements in test capacity, line speed, and quality.
Hardware Debugging & Cross-Functional Collaboration
- Failure Analysis & Debug: Perform root-cause analysis on failing boards and systems, guiding component-level and system-level fault isolation.
- Proto-Build & NPI Support: Partner with Hardware, Software, and Supply Chain teams across global time zones during prototype builds and New Product Introduction (NPI) phases.
Minimum & Preferred Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
- Education: Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE), Computer Science Engineering (CSE), or a related technical discipline.
- Experience: 0 to 2 years of relevant experience in test development, hardware validation, or automation.
- Core Technical Skills:
- Python Scripting: Ability to write clean, maintainable scripts for task automation and data parsing.
- Hardware Protocols: Basic working knowledge of low-level hardware communication protocols (e.g., I2C, SPI, UART, PCIe).
- NPI Knowledge: Basic understanding of the Product Development Lifecycle from concept to End-of-Life (EOL).
- Data Analytics: Ability to work with diagnostic logs and numerical datasets to evaluate test health.
Preferred Qualifications
- Hands-on experience with Python-based Test Automation frameworks (PyTest, Robot Framework, or custom test harnesses).
- Familiarity with Data Science / Analytics concepts for hardware yield tracking and predictive failure analysis.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present findings clearly.
- Adaptability and self-drive to collaborate effectively with cross-functional global teams across multiple time zones.
Extra Value Additions & Career Insights
Estimated Compensation & Pay Package
For an entry-level Test Development Engineer (Grade 4/5 equivalent) at Cisco Systems in Bangalore, total compensation typically ranges between ₹12,00,000 to ₹18,00,000 INR per annum (base pay + performance bonus + stock grants/RSUs), alongside standard Cisco benefits including medical coverage, wellness allowances, and tuition reimbursement.
Typical Interview & Selection Workflow
Cisco’s recruitment process for entry-level Hardware/Test Software positions generally follows a 4-step sequence:
- 1. Online Resume Screening & Online Coding/Aptitude Assessment (Python & Basic Electronics)
- 2. Technical Interview 1: Python Data Structures, Scripting Logic & Linux/OS Fundamentals
- 3. Technical Interview 2: Hardware Protocols (I2C, SPI), DFT Concepts, Debug Scenarios & Systems Thinking
- 4. Managerial & HR Round: Behavioral Alignment, Global Team Collaboration & Cultural Fit
Key Technical Topics to Review Before the Interview
- Python Concepts: File I/O, regex string parsing for log analysis, object-oriented programming (OOP), standard library modules (e.g., subprocess, argparse, sys), and basic unit testing framework syntax (unittest / pytest).
- Hardware Protocols: Understand master/slave relationships, clock lines, signal integrity, and usage differences between I2C (two-wire, multi-drop), SPI (four-wire, high-speed full duplex), and UART.
- Test Engineering Principles: Difference between In-Circuit Test (ICT) and Functional Test (FT); key metrics like First Pass Yield (FPY), Test Coverage, and Defect Per Million Opportunities (DPMO).
