Job description

Cambridge IGCSE Physics Tutor

Apex Academic Centre is looking for Cambridge Physics tutors to take IGCSE learners through Core and Extended, online across South Africa and internationally. You set your own hours, we bring you the learners.

  • Curriculum: Cambridge (CAIE, IGCSE)
  • Subject: Physics (Core and Extended)
  • Level: IGCSE (Years 10 and 11)
  • Mode: Online (On the MyAPEX platform)
  • Location: South Africa (Work from anywhere)
  • Engagement: Part time (Independent contractor)

This is an ongoing opening. Physics is one of the subjects Apex is asked for most and can staff least easily, so we keep a standing pool of verified IGCSE Physics tutors and match you when a learner in your subject and your available hours comes in.

About the role

Cambridge IGCSE Physics learners reach us from Cambridge schools across South Africa and from families schooling internationally, usually in Years 10 and 11. Most arrive for one of two reasons: they are strong at the maths but cannot yet explain the physics in words a marker will reward, or they can describe the concept perfectly and lose the marks in the calculation.

You would teach one to one, online, on Apex's own platform. Lessons are booked through MyAPEX and you accept the requests that fit your diary. There is no minimum number of hours and no fixed timetable, so this sits comfortably alongside a full-time teaching post.

What you would be doing
  1. Teaching Cambridge IGCSE Physics one to one, across motion, forces and energy, thermal physics, waves, electricity and magnetism, and atomic physics, at Core or Extended depending on the learner.
  2. Teaching the practical paper properly. Cambridge assesses experimental skills, and a learner who has never had to plan a method, tabulate results or spot a systematic error cannot pick that up in the exam room.
  3. Drilling the quantitative work, including rearranging equations, units and significant figures, and the graph work that carries a surprising share of the marks.
  4. Building written explanation, which is where most otherwise able physicists lose marks. Cambridge rewards precise cause and effect language, not a general description.
  5. Setting and marking work between lessons, through the app, so parents can see what was set and what came back.
  6. Keeping communication on the platform. All lesson communication and homework runs through MyAPEX, which is how Apex keeps a record for the parent and the learner.
What we need from you

A relevant qualification, typically a BEd, a PGCE, or a degree with a strong physics or engineering component.

Demonstrable Cambridge experience. You have taught or tutored IGCSE Physics and you know the Core and Extended split, the paper structure and the practical assessment.

An advantage, not a requirement: SACE registration. Many of the strongest tutors are graduates, postgraduates or subject specialists rather than registered schoolteachers. Where you do hold SACE registration, Apex verifies it and shows it on your profile, and parents do look for it.

A police clearance certificate if you tutor in person. Apex requires one for in-person tutoring. It is not required to tutor online, and you can add it later if you decide to teach face to face.

A laptop or desktop, a webcam, a stable internet connection and a quiet room to teach from. Apex checks all four.

Comfort teaching diagrams and working on screen. Physics online lives or dies on whether you can sketch a circuit or a ray diagram while you talk.

Helpful but not required: Cambridge AS and A Level Physics, and experience with learners moving across from CAPS or IEB.

What Apex verifies before your first lesson
Verification is a condition of engagement
  • Identity. Your ID or passport, and that the name on it matches your qualifications
  • Qualifications. The certificates behind the subjects and levels you want to teach
  • Police clearance. Required for in-person tutoring
  • SACE and other credentials. Verified and shown on your profile where you hold them, as an advantage rather than a requirement
  • Equipment. Machine, camera, connection and teaching room

Screening is a continuing condition, not a once-off. The detail sits in clause 4 of Tutor Terms and Conditions, and there is a full walkthrough in What it means to be a verified Apex tutor.

How the work reaches you
Learners come to you

You are matched on subject, curriculum and the hours you have actually marked as available. You accept or decline each request.

Paid on the 2nd

Tutor fees are paid monthly, on the 2nd of the month, per lesson actually delivered. If a date falls on a weekend or public holiday, it moves to the next business day.

You set the hours

No minimum, no fixed timetable. You tutor as an independent contractor and you decide how much work you take.

Questions tutors ask before applying

Do I need to send a CV?

No. Applications are made through MyAPEX, where you build a tutor profile once: your subjects, your curricula, your qualifications and your availability. Apex no longer accepts CVs or applications by email, because the profile is what parents read when they choose a tutor.

Is this a job or contract work?

Apex tutors are independent contractors, not employees. You set your own hours, you accept the bookings you want, and you are responsible for your own tax and statutory obligations. This is set out in the Tutor Terms and Conditions you accept when you register.

Can I teach the practical paper online?

Yes, and it is one of the reasons learners book a tutor. You are teaching experimental method, tables, graphs, sources of error and how to answer the questions, rather than supervising apparatus. Tutors who can do this well are in short supply.

Can I tutor Maths as well as Physics?

Yes. You list every subject and curriculum you can teach on your MyAPEX profile, and you are matched against all of them. Physics and Maths together is one of the most bookable combinations on the platform.

What happens after I apply?

You complete your profile on MyAPEX and upload your documents. Apex verifies them, and once you are cleared your profile goes live and you start receiving matched requests in your subjects. You are not charged anything to apply or to be listed.
