Role: CAE Simulation Engineer (LS-DYNA)
Location: Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India (On-site)
Employment type: Full-time
Industry: Space Technology
About Catalyx Space:
Catalyx Space is building the world's best reentry systems. Our reusable ReX vehicles return payloads from orbit at unprecedented scale, up to 12 tons and 60m³ of cargo, while operating the full mission lifecycle from launch to recovery. Our core innovation is a Origami-inspired deployable heat shield that combines the scalability of an inflatable system with the robustness of a rigid structure. Built from commercial off-the-shelf components, it enables the world's widest heat shields, the largest payload return volumes, and a scalable pathway for returning everything from commercial cargo to future space nuclear assets.
Role:
We are looking for a CAE Simulation Engineer – LS-DYNA with hands‑on experience in finite element modelling and nonlinear structural analysis. You will develop simulation models, perform explicit and implicit analyses, establish preload and pre‑stressed conditions, and support engineering teams through virtual validation and design optimisation. The role requires strong fundamentals in FEA, LS‑DYNA contact modelling, meshing, solver selection, and engineering interpretation of simulation results.
Key responsibilities:
- Develop and execute finite element models using LS‑DYNA
- Create and modify CAD models in SolidWorks for simulation and analysis
- Generate high-quality meshes suitable for explicit and implicit analyses
- Define appropriate contact algorithms based on simulation requirements
- Select and implement LS‑DYNA contact types including automatic, tied, surface‑to‑surface, node‑to‑surface, and eroding contacts where appropriate
- Perform both explicit and implicit analyses and select the appropriate solution methodology for each engineering problem
- Model structures using beam, cable, shell, and solid elements where applicable
- Apply Dynamic Relaxation (DR) methods to establish preload or pre‑stressed conditions before transient or nonlinear analyses
- Validate preload conditions and ensure stable transition from preload to the primary analysis phase
- Perform nonlinear structural, transient, quasi‑static, impact, or related analyses as required
- Review simulation convergence, energy balance, contact behaviour, mesh quality, and numerical stability
- Interpret simulation results and provide engineering recommendations for design improvements
- Collaborate with mechanical, structures, and design teams to optimise product performance and manufacturability
- Prepare simulation reports documenting assumptions, methodology, boundary conditions, results, and engineering conclusions
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field
- Hands‑on professional experience with LS‑DYNA
- Strong understanding of finite element analysis fundamentals
- Strong knowledge of LS‑DYNA contact definitions and their applications
- Understanding of contact selection criteria for different simulation scenarios
- Experience with beam and cable element modelling
- Strong understanding of explicit and implicit analysis methodologies and when each approach should be used
- Experience with meshing techniques and mesh‑quality requirements
- Experience using Dynamic Relaxation for preload and initial‑equilibrium conditions
- Ability to define appropriate material models, boundary conditions, loads, and constraints
- Strong analytical and engineering problem‑solving skills
- Ability to interpret and communicate simulation findings clearly
Nice to have:
- Experience with nonlinear structural simulations
- Experience with dynamic impact, crash, transient, or quasi‑static analyses
- Familiarity with preload and nonlinear boundary‑condition workflows in LS‑DYNA
- Experience with simulation‑based design optimisation and validation
- Experience correlating simulation results with physical test data
- Exposure to aerospace, spacecraft, defense, automotive, or other high‑reliability engineering applications
Compensation & benefits:
- Competitive salary (details will be shared with shortlisted candidates),
- health insurance
- Provident fund.
