Job Purpose
The BESS Site Engineer is responsible for end-to-end execution of Battery Energy Storage System projects at site, ensuring activities are completed safely, on time, within budget, and in compliance with technical specifications, quality standards, and statutory requirements. The role involves coordination with multiple stakeholders including EPC teams, OEMs, contractors, consultants, and clients.
Key Responsibilities
1. Project Mobilization & Planning
- Review project scope, drawings, technical specifications, BOQs, and schedules
- Participate in site mobilization, site surveys, and readiness assessments
- Support preparation of execution plans, method statements, and work schedules
- Coordinate manpower, tools, equipment, and materials for site execution
2. Electrical Engineering & Installation Activities
- Supervise installation of:
- BESS containers / enclosures
- Battery racks and battery modules
- Power Conversion Systems (PCS)
- Inverters, transformers, RMUs, switchgear, and auxiliary panels
- DC cabling, AC cabling, control and communication cables
- Earthing and lightning protection systems
- Ensure installation is as per approved drawings, OEM guidelines, and standards
3. Interface & Coordination
- Coordinate with:
- OEM engineers for battery, PCS, EMS, and SCADA systems
- Utility / grid authorities for grid interconnection activities
- Subcontractors for electrical erection and cabling works
- Act as the single point of contact at site for project execution matters
4. Quality Control & Documentation
- Implement project quality plans and inspection test plans (ITPs)
- Conduct inspections and ensure compliance with approved QA/QC proceduresEnsure proper documentation including:
- Daily progress reports
- Inspection checklists
- Test reports
- As-built drawings
- Material receipt and inspection records
5. Testing & Commissioning Support
- Support pre-commissioning activities
- Coordinate and assist during:
- Battery charging and formation
- PCS and inverter commissioning
- EMS / SCADA integration and testing
- Grid synchronization and performance testing
- Ensure issues are logged, rectified, and closed with OEMs
6. Health, Safety & Environment (HSE)
- Enforce strict adherence to HSE policies and site safety rules
- Conduct toolbox talks and safety briefings
- Ensure use of proper PPE and safe work practices
- Identify hazards related to high-voltage systems, batteries, and fire risks
- Report near misses, incidents, and unsafe conditions
7. Schedule & Cost Control
- Monitor daily and weekly progress against project schedule
- Identify potential delays and support mitigation planning
- Optimize resource utilization to minimize cost overruns
- Support material reconciliation and control of site inventory
8. Stakeholder & Client Management
- Attend site meetings with clients, consultants, and EPC management
- Provide technical clarifications and progress updates
- Support client inspections, testing, and acceptance activities
9. Project Handover & Close-Out
- Ensure completion of punch list items
- Support preparation of final documentation for handover
- Assist in training of operations & maintenance (O&M) teams
- Support smooth transition from construction to operations
