Job summary

Recro is seeking a Backend Software Engineer to own backend services, APIs and microservices end to end for a healthcare platform. You will design scalable architectures, implement robust data models, and ensure security and observability across production systems.

The role requires hands-on coding in Java or Python, strong system design skills, and collaboration with product and clinical teams. You will mentor junior engineers and help raise engineering practices.

Qualifications

• 3–4 years of backend development in internet product companies.
• Proficient in Java or Python with Spring Boot or FastAPI.
• Experience taking a product feature through design, build and production ops.
• Strong understanding of scalability, availability and architectural trade-offs.
• Solid OO design, design patterns and API contracts.
• Experience with PostgreSQL/MySQL or MongoDB and Redis.
• Kafka or similar messaging systems experience.
• Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools is a plus.
• Ability to work independently, handle ambiguity and communicate decisions.

We are looking for a Backend Software Engineer with experience building and scaling products at internet product companies. You will own backend services, APIs and microservices end to end, contributing to a new healthcare technology platform that supports patient journeys, clinical workflows and hospital operations.

This is a high-ownership role for engineers who enjoy solving complex problems, making architectural decisions, and building reliable, secure and scalable systems. You will also collaborate with cross-functional teams and mentor junior engineers.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop and operate scalable backend services, APIs and microservices using Java or Python.
• Own features end to end, from architecture and development to deployment, monitoring and continuous improvement.
• Design efficient data models, API contracts, caching strategies and asynchronous, event-driven workflows.
• Build reliable, secure and high-performance systems with strong automated testing and production monitoring.
• Work with relational and NoSQL databases, Redis, and messaging systems such as Kafka.
• Write design documents, evaluate architectural trade-offs and contribute to technical decision-making.
• Follow security and data privacy best practices, including access controls, encryption and audit trails.
• Participate in code reviews, troubleshoot production issues and contribute to on-call support.
• Use AI coding assistants and agents such as Claude Code, Cursor or GitHub Copilot to improve development productivity while maintaining code quality and security.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers and clinical and operations teams to translate real-world requirements into technical solutions.
• Mentor Associate Software Engineers and help establish strong engineering practices.

Must-Have Skills

• Experience: 3–4 years of backend development, including at least 3 years in internet product companies such as consumer internet, e-commerce, fintech or marketplaces.
• Programming: Strong proficiency in Java or Python, with hands-on experience in Spring Boot or FastAPI.
• Product Ownership: Experience taking a product feature or service through design, development, launch and production operations.
• System Design: Understanding of scalability, availability, consistency, reliability and architectural trade-offs.
• Low-Level Design: Strong fundamentals in object-oriented programming, design patterns, class design and API contracts.
• Databases & Caching: Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL/MySQL or MongoDB, along with Redis.
• Messaging: Experience with Kafka or similar messaging and streaming technologies.
• AI-Assisted Development: Practical experience using AI coding tools or agents for planning, coding, testing, debugging and refactoring, with the ability to validate their output.
• Problem Solving: Strong data structures, algorithms and analytical thinking.
• Ownership & Communication: Ability to work independently, handle ambiguity, communicate technical decisions and collaborate with senior stakeholders.

Good-to-Have Skills

• Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, CI/CD and Git-based workflows.
• Exposure to AWS or other cloud platforms and hybrid cloud/on-premise environments.
• Experience integrating AI/LLM capabilities into production applications.
• Experience building engineering automations or agents using MCP or similar tool integrations.
• Experience integrating third-party systems, payment gateways, ERPs or messaging platforms.
• Exposure to healthcare, fintech or other regulated industries.
• Familiarity with healthcare interoperability standards such as HL7/FHIR or ABDM.
• Experience mentoring junior engineers.
• Exposure to frontend technologies such as React.
