Job description

Azure Migration Engineer - Job Description

A Senior Azure Migration Engineer is a highly skilled and experienced individual contributor at the forefront of cloud transformation initiatives. This role is pivotal for organizations looking to modernize their IT infrastructure, streamline operations, and leverage the vast capabilities of Microsoft Azure. The engineer is responsible for the entire lifecycle of cloud migrations, from initial assessment and strategic planning to hands-on execution and post-migration optimization. This requires a deep and broad understanding of diverse technical landscapes, encompassing on-premises systems, other cloud platforms, and the comprehensive suite of Azure services.

Core Responsibilities And Expertise
  • On-Premises to Azure Migration
  • Server and Application Migration: Expertly migrating Windows and Linux servers, business-critical applications (e.g., SharePoint, Exchange, custom LOB apps), and associated workloads to Azure Virtual Machines (IaaS) or appropriate PaaS services.
  • Infrastructure Services: Migrating core services like Active Directory, DNS, DHCP, file shares, and print servers, ensuring seamless functionality in the cloud.
  • Hybrid Connectivity: Designing and implementing robust hybrid network solutions, including Azure ExpressRoute for dedicated private connections and Site-to-Site VPNs for secure links, to ensure smooth communication between on-premises and Azure environments during and after migration.
  • Other Cloud to Azure Migration
  • Cross-Cloud Understanding: Knowledge of fundamental services and architectural patterns in other major cloud platforms (e.g., AWS EC2/VPC, GCP Compute Engine/VPC).
  • Tooling and Best Practices: Leveraging appropriate tools and methodologies for efficient and secure data transfer, workload conversion, and application re-platforming from one cloud to another. This often involves understanding how to translate services and configurations between cloud ecosystems.
  • Azure to Azure Migration
  • Resource Relocation: Shifting Azure Virtual Machines, storage accounts, networking components, databases, and specialized services like AKS clusters and AVD deployments between different Azure regions, subscriptions, or tenants.
  • Tenant-to-Tenant Migrations: Executing complex migrations when organizations merge or divest, requiring the transfer of entire Azure environments.
Technical Domain Expertise
  • Cloud Service Models (IaaS, PaaS, SaaS)
    • IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service): Deep technical understanding of Azure Virtual Machines, Virtual Networks (VNets), Network Security Groups (NSGs), Azure Load Balancers, Azure Firewalls, and various storage options (Blob, File, Disk storage). They ensure optimized performance, security, and cost-effectiveness for migrated IaaS workloads.
    • PaaS (Platform as a Service): Proficiency in migrating and modernizing applications to Azure PaaS offerings such as Azure App Service for web applications, Azure Functions for serverless compute, Azure SQL Database, Azure Cosmos DB, Azure Event Hubs, and Azure Service Bus. This often involves refactoring applications to leverage cloud-native capabilities.
    • SaaS (Software as a Service): While not direct migration, understanding how to integrate and manage SaaS solutions within an Azure ecosystem, particularly concerning identity management with Azure Active Directory (now Microsoft Entra ID) for seamless user experience and access control.
  • Database Migration (Good to have)
    • Heterogeneous and Homogeneous Migrations: Skill in moving databases between different platforms (e.g., Oracle to Azure SQL Database, MySQL to Azure Database for MySQL) or within the same platform (e.g., SQL Server on-premises to Azure SQL Managed Instance).
    • Tools & Techniques: Extensive use of Azure Database Migration Service (DMS), Azure Data Studio with SQL Migration Extension, and manual methods for schema and data transfer.
    • Optimization: Assessing database compatibility, identifying potential issues, and optimizing migrated databases for performance, scalability, and cost within Azure.
  • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS)
    • Application Containerization: Guiding teams in containerizing existing applications and migrating them to AKS.
    • AKS Deployment & Management: Designing, deploying, and managing AKS clusters, including configuring networking, persistent storage (Azure Disk, Azure Files, Azure NetApp Files), scaling strategies, and monitoring solutions.
    • CI/CD Integration: Integrating AKS deployments into automated CI/CD pipelines using tools like Azure DevOps or GitHub Actions.
  • Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD)
    • VDI Migration: Expertise in migrating traditional Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) environments (e.g., Citrix, VMware Horizon, Microsoft Remote Desktop Services) to AVD.
    • AVD Design & Deployment: Designing and deploying AVD host pools, application groups, workspaces, and session hosts.
    • User Experience Optimization: Implementing user profile management with FSLogix containers, optimizing images, and configuring networking for a seamless user experience.
    • Integration: Ensuring AVD integrates securely with Azure Active Directory (Microsoft Entra ID) and other necessary Azure services for identity and access management.
Core Competencies and Tooling
  • Familiarity with Migration Tools
    • Azure Migrate: The primary service for discovering, assessing, and migrating servers, databases, web apps, and VDI from on-premises to Azure.
    • Azure Database Migration Service (DMS): For efficient and near-zero downtime database migrations.
    • Azure Site Recovery (ASR): Often leveraged for disaster recovery and migration of virtual machines.
    • AZCopy and Azure Storage Explorer: For high-performance data transfer to Azure storage.
    • PowerShell/Azure CLI: Essential for scripting, automation, and managing Azure resources.
    • Infrastructure as Code (IaC): Proficient in using tools like Terraform, Azure Resource Manager (ARM) templates, and Bicep to automate infrastructure provisioning, ensuring consistency and repeatability of deployments.
    • CI/CD Tools: Experience with Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, or similar platforms for automating the build, test, and deployment phases of migration and modernization efforts.
  • Individual Contributor Capabilities
    • Leadership & Ownership: Ability to lead migration projects, define scope, manage timelines, and ensure successful delivery without direct team management responsibilities.
    • Problem-Solving & Troubleshooting: Exceptional analytical skills to identify, diagnose, and resolve complex technical issues that arise during migrations.
    • Documentation & Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills to create detailed migration plans, runbooks, and provide clear progress updates and post-migration reports to stakeholders.
    • Best Practices: Adherence to Microsoft Azure's Cloud Adoption Framework and Well-Architected Framework for designing secure, high-performing, cost-effective, and operationally excellent cloud solutions.
    • Cost Optimization: Proactively identifying and implementing strategies to optimize Azure consumption costs post-migration.
