Job summary

Barry-Wehmiller Corporate GCC in Chennai seeks a Lead Mechanical Engineer to independently execute complex machine design for Secondary Packaging and End of Line automation from concept to release. You’ll work on design, verification, and documentation, including FMEA, FEA, and CAD drawings.

The role requires 10+ years in mechanical design, strong GD&T skills, and experience with OEMs, installation, and commissioning. Travel up to 10% may be needed; excellent English communication is essential.

Qualifications

  • Bachelors in Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering is required.
  • 10+ years of hands-on design and development experience.
  • Experience with OEMs, machine installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
  • Proficient in GD&T, FEA, and engineering calculations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead design and development of Second­ary Packaging machinery and End of Line automation.
  • Prepare DFMEA/risk assessments and SRS documentation.
  • Create 3D models and manufacturing drawings with GD&T per ISO/DIN/ANSI.
  • Support FAT, commissioning, and field issues; mentor junior engineers.
  • Study existing machine functions and discuss changes with product managers.

Job description:

Lead Mechanical Engineer who independently executes conventional engineering work on complex machines Secondary Packaging machinery, End of Line automation equipment, and discrete product machineries from concept through BOM release.

  • Works independently in design & development and support, on either redesign of an existing design for a new requirement, or development of a new design for the first time for a given requirement.
  • Should have worked on at least a couple of engineering projects from start to finish: defining the project scope, preparing a DOU/Specification, ideation, concept development, detailed design, design verification, design reviews, FMEA, FEA, DFX, and engineering drawing release.
  • Participates in design reviews and risk assessments, and supports FAT, production teams, and commissioning activities with technical expertise.
  • Growing ability to advise junior engineers and flag design issues proactively during project execution.

Technical skills:

  • Engineering: Engineering Mechanics (Statics and Dynamics), Strength of Materials, engineering design from first principles, engineering calculations for design validation, FEA, Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerance, Stack-up analysis, Hydraulics, Pneumatics
  • Materials: Knowledge of engineering materials and material selection for a given requirement; knowledge of conventional and unconventional manufacturing processes and associated tolerances
  • Parts selection: Experience in selection of OEM parts (bearings, sprockets, belts, etc.), guided by engineering direction on novel applications
  • Industry-specific experience: Discrete machines / SPM / Machine Tool / Automation: Material Handling, Secondary Packaging machinery, End of Line automation equipment, Conveyor systems, Bulk Material handling, Industrial products
  • CAD: Ability to create 3D models and associated 2D manufacturing drawings with GD&T. Adherence to CAD standards ISO, DIN, ANSI; experience in MBD is an added advantage. CAD tools experience using SolidWorks and all its modules; experience with more than one CAD tool is an added advantage
  • Exposure to machine building, installation, and commissioning is an added advantage

Mandatory Skills:

  • Product / machine design and development experience following industry best practices
  • Engineering calculations, stack-up analysis, GD&T
  • Good proficiency using engineering tools/techniques such as VAVE, FMEA, FEA, DFX
  • Ability to prepare DFMEA/risk assessments, functional specifications, and SRS documentation independently
  • Selection of material and OEM parts
  • Good understanding of Electricals & Controls used in any product / machine
  • 3D CAD tool skills SolidWorks (Must) / Creo, Inventor (added advantage)
  • Problem solving skills thinking outside the box, creative solutions for solving problems
  • Ability to work independently with moderate supervision on discrete project components

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelors degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics engineering

  • Experience with OEMs preferable, with exposure to machine installation, commissioning, and troubleshooting field issues

Travel:

  • May need to travel up to 10% each year based on requirements.

  • Preparing a DOU from an overview provided, estimating effort and schedule, presenting the DOU, seeking clarifications and agreeing on the SOW, effort, and schedule
  • Ability to study and understand existing machine function and the required changes, and initiate technical discussion with respective product managers
