Job Purpose

The AGM – Design Engineering (Electrical) will be responsible for leading and managing the Electrical Design Engineering team for solar projects. The position will be responsible for checking, reviewing, approving, and ensuring the technical quality of all electrical designs and engineering deliverables.

The role requires strong knowledge of solar PV electrical systems, HT/LT systems, power evacuation, electrical protection, equipment selection, and applicable standards. The candidate will act as the technical authority for electrical design, ensuring that all designs are technically sound, optimized, compliant, constructible, and delivered within project timelines.

Key Responsibilities

1. Team Leadership & Management

  • Lead, manage, and mentor the Electrical Design Engineering team.
  • Allocate design activities to engineers and monitor progress against project schedules.
  • Review team performance, workload, deliverables, and technical quality.
  • Develop the technical capabilities of design engineers.
  • Establish design review procedures, checklists, standards, and workflows.
  • Ensure timely completion of all engineering deliverables.
  • Resolve technical issues within the design team and provide engineering guidance.

2. Design Checking & Approval – Primary Responsibility

  • Check and approve electrical designs prepared by the design team.
  • Review all major electrical engineering drawings, calculations, specifications, and documents before issue.
  • Ensure accuracy, completeness, constructability, and compliance of designs.
  • Review and approve:
    • Single Line Diagrams (SLD)
    • Electrical layouts
    • DC/AC system designs
    • Cable sizing and cable schedules
    • Transformer sizing
    • HT/LT switchgear design
    • Inverter and RMU configuration
    • Earthing and lightning protection
    • Protection and metering schemes
    • Substation layouts
    • SCADA and communication architecture
    • Power evacuation systems
    • Electrical BOQ and equipment specifications
  • Ensure that designs are properly reviewed and checked before submission to clients/consultants or release for construction.
  • Identify design errors, omissions, interface issues, and technical risks and ensure timely closure.
  • Provide final technical approval/sign-off as per the organization's approval matrix.

3. Solar Electrical Engineering

  • Lead electrical engineering for utility-scale, C&I, captive, rooftop, and other solar PV projects.
  • Review PV string configuration, inverter sizing, DC/AC ratio, transformer capacity, and electrical system architecture.
  • Review electrical losses and recommend design improvements.
  • Ensure optimum design for plant performance, reliability, safety, and cost.
  • Review energy-yield-related electrical design inputs in coordination with the relevant teams.

4. Electrical Calculations & Technical Review

Review and validate engineering calculations including:

  • Load flow analysis
  • Short-circuit/fault-level calculations
  • Voltage-drop calculations
  • Cable sizing
  • Transformer sizing
  • Equipment rating calculations
  • Earthing calculations
  • Protection coordination
  • Auxiliary load calculations
  • DC system calculations
  • Electrical loss calculations

Ensure appropriate design margins and equipment ratings are considered.

5. Technical Specifications & Equipment Selection

  • Review and approve technical specifications for electrical equipment.
  • Check technical requirements for:
    • Transformers
    • Inverters
    • HT/LT panels
    • VCB/RMU
    • CT/PT
    • Protection relays
    • Cables
    • SCADA systems
    • Earthing systems
    • Lightning protection systems
  • Review vendor technical offers and approve technical evaluations.
  • Review and approve vendor drawings and technical documents.

6. Client / Consultant / Vendor Coordination

  • Act as the technical point of contact for electrical design matters.
  • Participate in technical meetings with clients, consultants, vendors, and project teams.
  • Present and defend design proposals and technical solutions.
  • Respond to technical comments and ensure timely closure.
  • Review client/consultant comments and direct the design team for necessary modifications.
  • Coordinate with Project, Procurement, Construction, QA/QC, and O&M departments.

7. Design Optimization & Cost Control

  • Identify opportunities for design optimization and value engineering.
  • Optimize electrical system configuration while maintaining reliability and safety.
  • Review electrical BOQs and identify opportunities for material and cost optimization.
  • Ensure designs are practical and suitable for site execution.
  • Minimize design changes, rework, and site-related engineering issues.

8. Standards, Compliance & Quality

Ensure all designs comply with applicable:

  • CEA regulations and requirements
  • IS standards
  • IEC standards
  • IEEE standards, where applicable
  • Grid Code requirements
  • DISCOM/STU/CTU requirements
  • Client specifications
  • Project-specific technical requirements
  • Applicable safety regulations

Maintain high standards of engineering quality and documentation.

9. Project Execution Support

  • Provide technical support to the construction and commissioning teams.
  • Resolve site queries related to electrical design.
  • Review and approve design changes arising during project execution.
  • Participate in site inspections and technical reviews whenever required.
  • Support testing, commissioning, synchronization, and handover activities.
  • Ensure as-built drawings and final engineering documentation are reviewed and approved.

    Educational Qualification

    Mandatory

    B.E./B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering.

    Candidates from Mechanical, Civil, Electronics, or other engineering disciplines will not be considered for this position.

    Preferred

    • M.E./M.Tech. in Electrical Engineering / Power Systems / Renewable Energy.
    • Relevant professional certifications will be an advantage.

    Experience Required

    • 12–18 years of experience in Electrical Design & Engineering, preferably in the Solar / Renewable Energy / Power sector.
    • Strong experience in solar PV electrical design is preferred.
    • Minimum several years of experience in team leadership and design checking/approval.
    • Experience in handling multiple solar projects simultaneously will be an advantage.

      • Coordinate directly with clients, consultants, vendors, and project teams on electrical engineering matters.
      • Ensure that only technically checked and approved designs are released for further execution.
