Job description

MBRYONICS is at the forefront of free space optical communications. Our product

portfolio covers a wide range of emerging technologies from photonic integrated circuits to advanced optical systems and embedded software solutions. Our optical communications systems are integrated and deployed in satellite communications systems. The work is exciting and challenging and is at the forefront of the technology domains. As part of our expansion, we are currently looking for a suitably motivated Systems Engineer to join our group.

You will play a fundamental role in ensuring the quality and reliability of our products: you will be responsible for planning, executing, and documenting validation activities at sub-component and system design and integration levels. This includes designing and executing systems design, requirements analysis, test plans, and preparing validation and verification procedures. You will also work closely with the product teams (Embedded Software, Electronics, Mechatronics, Photonics, Optics and Assembly-Integration-Test) and project managers to ensure that systems are appropriately specified and meet all relevant specifications and requirements. Our products and projects are for both space and terrestrial applications, requiring a high level of quality assurance and planning.

What you'll do
  • Develop and execute design and validation plans for complex hardware and software systems
  • Design, develop, and execute test cases to validate system functionality, performance, reliability, and usability
  • Prepare comprehensive reports that clearly communicate design and validation, and analyse the performance and progress against requirements to report any issues
  • Stay up-to-date on industry trends, testing methodologies, and tools, while contributing to the improvement of systems and validation processes and procedures
  • Systems component identification, specification and selection suitable for aerospace/space deployment
  • Specification to relevant ISO/IEC/JEDEC standards, with specific reference to aerospace standards from NASA/ECSS, including inclusion of new and emerging standards.
  • Creation and specification of power and communications link budgets for (sub)systems
  • Development of (sub)systems from prototype to aerospace-qualified products
  • Work closely with interdisciplinary mechanical, embedded, photonic and optical teams to design for mechanically and thermally constrained environments with strict optical requirements
  • Support and systems development for Design for Manufacture
  • Liaise with sponsors, contractors, satellite bus manufacturers, and sub-contractors for requirements collection and design specification and conformance.
  • Documentation and review of design, test & validation of (sub)system designs
  • Specification and verification of complex systems for tenders and bids, and on-going projects.
  • Willingness to participate with design engineering and test teams across diverse range of disciplines
Who you are
  • BE or similar with postgraduate or industry qualifications in systems engineering
  • Proven industry experience
  • Experience in system architectural design and application of systems engineering practices
  • Experience with ECSS/NASA standards and their applicability to design, integration and validation processes
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodology and SCRUM framework
  • Experience in Model-based philosophy of complex systems, and model simulation tools
  • Experience with Python or other scripting, modelling or software coding to validate concepts
  • Experience with typical design and manufacturing test equipment/systems
  • Design experience in a related space, software, aerospace, defence or automotive industry
  • Experience with aerospace & radiation hardened component selection, component derating, custody and testing practices
  • Experience developing electrical power models and budgets, thermal modelling
  • Experience developing noise models and link budgets for communication systems
  • Experience with satellite integration and test
  • Experience with ISO 9000 series quality assurance systems
  • Knowledge of best practice in Design for Manufacture
  • Software inter-networking and distributed systems design
  • A familiarity with engineering software e.g ANSYS, SolidWorks, Fusion360, Altium, Cadence, Zemax, Simulink etc
  • A familiarity with orbital systems design software, e.g. SDK, Matlab Satellite Communications Toolbox, Basilisk, etc.
