Job summary

MongoDB is seeking a Staff Engineer for the Server Ingress Security team, based in Dublin or Cork with a hybrid working model. You will define technical strategy, own security networking plans, and build production-grade Rust services to strengthen the Atlas Network Protec­tion layer.

Qualifications

• 10+ years of production-quality systems software experience.

Responsibilities

• Define and drive the technical strategy for Ingress Security with stakeholders across teams.
• Own the design, planning, and execution of technical plans for security and networking solutions.

• Collaborate with Engineering leadership to improve the security posture of MongoDB's ingress stack.
• Advise on engineering complexity, risk, and inter-project dependencies.
• Handle time-sensitive escalations and production incidents requiring expert support.
• Diagnose test failures, bugs, performance regressions, and defects.

Come join the Server Ingress Security team, where we are rearchitecting MongoDB Server’s ingress networking to make MongoDB clusters even more secure. This new team is building the Atlas Network Protection layer, a set of performant, security-critical services that harden MongoDB's pre-authentication attack surface and provides the ability to respond rapidly to emergent threats. We are looking for talented Staff Engineers to join the team and be founding members, where you will play a crucial role in our multi-year roadmap.

Candidate Profile

• 10+ years of experience building production-quality systems software with a large user base, robust design structure, and rigorous code quality
  • Experience with large backend/compiled codebases and performance-sensitive software, preferably in Rust
  • Bonus points for experience working hands-on in security-sensitive or networking-adjacent domains
• Strong systems fundamentals, including multi-threaded programming and performance profiling.
  • Understanding of network protocols, TLS, and connection lifecycle management.
  • Familiarity with security concepts such as attack surface reduction, input validation, memory safety, and defense-in-depth architectures.
• Excellent verbal and written technical communication skills for communicating to a wide variety of audiences ranging from junior engineers to executive stakeholder
• Strong mentorship skills, and excitement about leveling up your peers and teammates through coaching, feedback, and enablement
• Strong time management skills and the ability to realistically assess project complexity
• B.Sc. in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience, with strong competencies in data structures, algorithms, and software design/architecture. Interest in the theory and practice of high-availability, security-critical systems
• Passion for learning new things in the domains of computer science and software engineering

Position Expectations

• Define and drive the technical strategy for Ingress Security, in collaboration with stakeholders across Server, Atlas, SRE, and Product Security
• Own the definition, planning, and execution of technical plans to deliver solutions to ambiguous, high-impact security and networking problems
• Design, implement, and operate production-ready security services in Rust, with a focus on security, correctness, performance, and operational excellence
• Collaborate with Engineering leadership and other Product & Technology teams on roadmaps to improve the security posture of MongoDB's ingress stack
• Advise across the team and organization on engineering complexity, risk, and inter-project dependencies
• Handle time-sensitive escalations and production incidents that require expert support from Ingress Security
• Diagnose test failures, identify bugs, performance regressions, and other defects in existing code, and fix them
• Interview candidates for software engineering positions, and work with Engineering leadership to cultivate the team's talent bench for long-term growth and success
• Develop and maintain expertise on relevant cutting-edge research in systems security, network security, and memory-safe systems programming from industry and academia

Success Measures

• In the first month: Understand the high-level architecture of the Atlas Network Protection layer, set up your development environment, and resolve a few bugs
• In three months: Contribute substantially to the Rust development of a current project or milestone, take on code review responsibilities, and participate in reviewing designs for new features
• In six months: Independently lead the development of major a new feature and help mentor new engineers on the team
• In twelve months: Drive the Planning, Design, and Execution of major improvements to our security, availability, performance, or operational capabilities
