Our Story

Unum Technology Centre in Carlow serves as a strategic software development and IT services centre supporting Unum, a leading provider of income protection in the US. Our team of IT professionals build solutions and critical business applications to digitally transform the way we do business.

Join our agile development team as an entry-level software engineer to build and configure software solutions across our business portfolio. You'll contribute to high-quality software delivery through unit testing, continuous integration, and collaborative development. This role also involves estimating effort for new features and working closely with team members to ensure successful outcomes

The Role
  • Design, implement, and maintain new and existing features across a portfolio of applications.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to ensure successful feature delivery.
  • Develop software using agreed standards and tools, including coding, configuration, unit testing, and documentation.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies including daily stand-ups, sprint planning, retrospectives, and code reviews.
  • Participates in on-call rotation and off-hours support to ensure system stability and customer SLAs are met.
  • Estimate and size work items with your agile team.
  • Focus on delivering business value and prioritizing customer needs.
  • Ensure high-quality software through manual and automated testing, and continuous integration.
  • Align solutions with company architecture and standards.
  • Support proof-of-concept and prototyping efforts.
  • Work closely with Business Analysts to clarify and shape deliverable requirements.
  • Partner with UX Designers to translate designs into functional solutions.
  • Help define and uphold the team’s “Definition of Done.”
  • Collaborate with Test Engineers to ensure smooth transitions between development stages.
  • Foster a culture of innovation and continuous improvement.
  • Assist Technical Support Engineers in transitioning features to production, ensuring performance and stability.
  • Automate testing to industry standards for efficient regression and high-quality delivery.
  • Keep ALM tools updated and communicate progress and blockers during stand-ups.
  • Always think from the customer’s perspective to enhance user experience.
What You Offer
  • 2+ years of experience in software development, ideally at the Associate level.
  • 2+ years experience with SQL; including stored procedures, complex queries, and optimization of large-scale data processing and analysis.
  • Additional preferred experience: Mainframe, SSIS, SSRS, GitHub, C#.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Agile development methodologies.
  • Self-motivated, results-driven, and innovative.
  • Committed to high-quality delivery and customer satisfaction.
  • Excellent communication skills—both written and verbal.
  • Collaborative team player, comfortable working across diverse teams and functions.
