Job summary

Toast is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join the Toast Connect team in Dublin. You will design, build, deploy, and maintain scalable backend microservices and RESTful APIs using Kotlin/Java on AWS, and lead cross-team initiatives to scale our SaaS platform.

You will mentor engineers, drive best practices in testing and deployment, monitor health and metrics, and collaborate closely with PM/UX to deliver new features and data integrations, while embracing AI tooling as part of your

Qualifications

• Familiarity with distributed systems concepts and cloud platforms (AWS).
• Strong communication and problem-solving skills in an agile, cross-functional team.
• Experience designing RESTful APIs and building scalable, fault-tolerant distributed systems.
• Hands-on building of backend services in Kotlin/Java with testing and code quality in mind.

Responsibilities

• Champion automated testing and phased rollouts to ensure zero-regression releases.
• Monitor service health, analyze logs/metrics, and participate in on-call rotations.

• Toast is looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Toast Connect team in Dublin. The Connect team owns how everything outside Toast connects to Toast including the event infrastructure every team at Toast uses to publish data, the frameworks partners and customers use to integrate through our APIs, and a new charter to make Toast the source of truth for all the data about the customers we serve
• You will play a key role in evolving our platform to support ever more complex new features and best-in-class monitoring as we scale to orders of magnitude of our current size!

• Design, build, deploy, and maintain scalable backend microservices and RESTful APIs using Java / Kotlin and AWS infrastructure
• Lead complex projects that may span multiple teams & systems
• Champion best practices such quality automated testing and phased rollouts to ensure zero-regression releases and high test coverage
• Monitor service health for success & failure, analyze logs and metrics (Datadog/CloudWatch), and participate in on-call rotations to maintain platform uptime
• Collaborate with peer engineers, provide design feedback, and participate in code reviews
• Collaborate with PM & UX on the development of new features & products
• Mentor & coach your peer engineers
• Use AI tooling as a genuine part of your workflow, not an afterthought

Familiarity with distributed systems concepts, asynchronous messaging (Kafka, Pulsar, or AWS SQS/SNS), and cloud platforms (AWS) Demonstrate humility, empathy and respectfulness Strong communication & problem-solving skills, curiosity to learn restaurant domain workflows, and enthusiasm for collaborating in an agile, cross-functional team Have strong understanding & hands-on experience of building RESTful apis, fault-tolerant, highly-scalable & secure distributed systems Proficiency with sql/nosql databases, strong understanding of distributed datastores and knowledge of when to use what 5+ years professional backend software development in Kotlin, Java, or another object-oriented language, with solid instincts around testing and code quality Experience designing platform APIs that other teams depend on - platform thinking, not just feature delivery Comfort with document-based or columnar data stores a plus
