Cheeverstown provides supported living, respite, New Directions, and employment supports to adults with intellectual disabilities. Cheeverstown is a section 38-funded organisation.
Cheeverstown clinic is a multidisciplinary team of health and social care professionals working in social work, music therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy, pharmacy, psychology, speech and language therapy and administration. We support people with their physical health, psychological health and social support needs. We offer a primary care type service for adults with intellectual disabilities who use Cheeverstown New Directions and supported living services.
Job Purpose: The purpose of the role is to support the provision of a high quality, person-centred occupational therapy service to adults supported by Cheeverstown.
Flexibility:In order to maintain the highest possible standards of care, Cheeverstown requires staff to be flexible in their duties and/or working hours.
Hours:Fulltime, 35 hours, Monday-Friday. Permanent role.
Qualification & Eligibility : The senior occupational therapist will:
- Possess a diploma or degree in occupational therapy from a recognised third level institution
- Be registered as an occupational therapist by the Occupational Therapy Registration Board at CORU and maintain annual registration with CORU.
Post Qualification Experience
It is necessary for a senior occupational therapist to have at least three years satisfactory post-qualification experience.

- Previous experience in seating assessment and provision.
Key Clinical Duties
- The management of a clinical caseload as assigned by the physiotherapy and occupational therapy manager. The occupational therapist will liaise with the multidisciplinary team and staff for coordinated maximum effectiveness of treatment, discharge, and follow up.
- Prioritisation of referrals to occupational therapy with the multidisciplinary team in co-operation with other team members. To develop and build links with local primary care teams and support primary care programmes for people living in the community.
- Assessment, diagnosis, and formulation of treatment for adults referred through the multidisciplinary team.
- Provision of a person-centered occupational therapy service that may be clinic based, domiciliary, or day service-based, depending on the needs of the particular case.
- Provision of evidence based, high quality occupational therapy assessment and intervention, in line with local policies and procedures.
- Assistance in the development and implementation of individual programme plans for the adults supported by the service, including sensory strategies and approaches to support independence.
- Provision of training for parents, carers, staff and colleagues, as part of the multidisciplinary team.
- Provision of input to the standard operating procedure for falls management in Cheeverstown.
- Coordination and organisation of Cheeverstown seating clinics, support of postural management clinics and coordination with relevant external agencies to support provision of seating and wheeled mobility for those with complex postural needs.
- Completion of comprehensive environmental assessments to determine the suitability of respective environments to meet an individual’s needs. Identification of necessary environmental adaptations and liaison with relevant team members or external agencies to advocate for and coordinate necessary adaptations.
- Collaboration with speech and language therapy colleagues to facilitate Cheeverstown’s local technology clinic, including assessment and intervention to identify how technology could improve independence and increase participation in daily activities.
- Collaboration, as appropriate, in relation to maintenance, annual servicing, and repair of occupational therapy equipment.
- Collaboration and communication with other disciplines to ensure occupational therapy programmes are integrated with other programmes of care.
- Administration of the occupational therapy caseload, including record keeping and providing statistics as required in line with local procedures. Maintenance of confidentiality of client information and correct storage of same.
- Participation in case conferences, clinical and educational reviews as appropriate and production of occupational therapy reports as required.Contribution to organizational level reports as required.
Administrative & General Duties
- Maintain a high standard of work performance, attendance, appearance and punctuality at all times.
- Operate in adherence to professional standards, policies, and procedures, including Cheeverstown’s policies.
- Maintain a high standard of confidentiality in relation to all aspects of work.
- Provide supervision, support and mentoring for staff grade occupational therapists, occupational therapy students and assistants.Actively engage in staff development and training by making recommendations with regard to the ongoing education, mentoring, training and in-service needs of same.
- Assist in the setting and monitoring of clinical standards, evaluation of practice, research and development of clinical projects.
- Maintain standards of practice and levels of professional knowledge by monitoring and reviewing the standards within own areas of responsibility, participating in and striving to achieve continuous professional development, including managerial skills.
- Keep abreast of developments in national policies and strategies and current best practices by attending post-graduate courses and seminars as approved by the manager and by reviewing published articles.Keep up to date with developments within the Irish health and social services.
- Advise on the needs of the area and contribute to forward planning and development of the occupational therapy service.
- Participate in the development and implementation of new initiatives in the area, in consultation with the clinical services manager.To contribute to the development and implementation of Cheeverstown’s policies and procedures, as appropriate.
- Liaise with staff of other disciplines and other agencies where necessary to ensure that effective communication and reporting takes place at all times (e.g. HSE, hospitals and other agencies.)
- Undertake periodic reviews of the occupational therapy service.
Training
- Maintain updates and job knowledge by participating in educational and CPD opportunities, and in self-professional development.
- Attend mandatory training when allocated.
- Receive clinical and professional supervision from the occupational therapy and physiotherapy manager, and from other therapists/professionals as required.
- Participate in the annual performance achievement process.
Quality, Risk, Health and Safety Management
- Promote a safe working environment in accordance with health and safety legislation.
- Be aware of and implement agreed policies, procedures, and safe professional practice by adhering to relevant legislation, regulations, and standards.
- Actively participate in risk management issues, identify risks, and take responsibility for appropriate action.
- Report and adverse incidents in accordance with organisational guidelines.
- Have a good working knowledge of HIQA Standards as they apply to the role for example; Standards for Healthcare, National Standards for the Prevention and Control of Healthcare Associated Infections, Hygiene Standards etc.
- Make positive efforts to maintain his/her own personal safety and that of other staff and the people supported by Cheeverstown, in accordance with the health & safety policies of Cheeverstown.
- Ensure that the environment in which they are working is safe for people using the service and for staff.
- Report all accidents and incidents to the occupational therapy & physiotherapy manager and adhere to Cheeverstown’s risk management policy.
- Ensure that all work is carried out in a safe manner and adhere to Cheeverstown’s health and safety policies.
- Ensure the implementation of agreed policies and procedures and safe professional practice by adherence to relevant legislation and regulations.
